Mastodons Get Pair of Shutouts at Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C. - The IPFW Mastodons improved on their already stellar earned run average this season with a pair of shutouts, winning 1-0 in eight innings over tournament host Coastal Carolina and then with a 4-0 victory over Temple in the team's nightcap.
IPFW came into the day with a miniscule 0.82 team ERA, and after the 15 innings of shutout softball, that number was lowered to 0.56, as Courtney Cronin picked up the win int he opener, and Miranda Kramer the seven innings against Temple.
Against Coastal Carolina, the Chanticleers threatened in the second inning, putting runners on the corners with just one out, but Cronin forced a pair of groundouts to third baseman Ashleigh Bousquet to end the threat.
The Mastodons put a runner on second base in the fourth inning but could not score, before Coastal Carolina put a runner on third with one out, but again was left stranded.
In the eighth inning, with a runner, Kayti Hanson, placed on second base due to the international tiebreaker rule, the freshman was pushed to third on a single by Audrey Mintari, before Cassie Wolfe reached on a fielder's choice that scored Hanson, and giving the 'Dons the 1-0 victory.
Cronin went the entire eight innings, scattering five hits, walking one and striking out two.
On offense, IPFW was held to just five hits, two from Larissa Franklin, with Hanson scoring the contest's only run.
The Mastodons kept their momentum from the first game and turned it into a run in the first inning against Temple, a team that defeated IPFW 2-1 the day before. Stephanie Beuther singled home Alex Bousquet, who opened the game with a walk, staking IPFW to a 1-0 lead.
The teams played through two scoreless innings before IPFW added some insurance runs in the top of the fourth inning when Ashleigh Bousquet his a bases-loaded single, driving in Brittany Kachur and Hanson.
In the fifth inning Cronin hit an inning-opening solo home run, giving the game its 4-0 final score.
Kramer, a freshman, was the story of the game for IPFW, as she struck out 11 in picking up her first collegiate victory, walking two.
The Mastodons return to action for the team's final game of the 2012 Chanticleer Challenge against Sacred Heart at 10 a.m.
