CONWAY, S.C. - Behind a six-run fourth inning, and a four-run seventh, the IPFW Mastodons raced past the Sacred Heart Pioneers by a 10-5 final score on Sunday afternoon in the team's final game of the Chanticleer Challenge.
Mackenzie Ritsema went 3-for-5 for IPFW, while three others, Kayti Hanson, Ashleigh Bousquet, and Brittany Kachur each picked up two hits, while Bousquet added four RBI's.
The win improves IPFW's record to 6-2 on the young season.
Sacred Heart opened the scoring in the game with an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning, and the game remained scoreless until the fourth inning.
The Mastodons batted around in the fourth frame, as the tying run came when Courtney Cronin hit a one-out solo home run, knotting the score at one apiece. Kachur followed with a single up the middle that scored Ritsema, before Audrey Mintari scored on an error by the Pioneer center fielder. After a Hanson walk loaded the bases, Ashleigh Bousquet singled down the left field line, chasing home twin sister Alex Bousquet and Kachur, giving IPFW a 5-1 lead, before Stephanie Beuther, who opened the inning with a foul out, singled to center field, scoring Hanson and capping off the six-run inning.
The Pioneers answered back with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to cut the deficit to 6-4; however, IPFW came away with four more runs in the top of the seventh inning, the first when Larissa Franklin scored on an Alex Bousquet single, before Ashleigh Bousquet drove in two more - Alex Bousquet and Kachur - as Cronin later drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Mastodons a season-high 10 runs.
Sacred Heart scored once in the bottom of the seventh, but the six-run deficit was too much to overcome in the 10-5 IPFW win.
Cronin picked up the win in the circle for the Mastodons, going four and two-thirds of an inning, striking out two and scattering six hits and three earned runs. Megan Flenniken came on in relief to pitch the final two and a third inning, striking out five, walking one and giving up just one hit in the contest.
The Mastodons return to action next weekend when the squad faces off at the Marshall Invitational on March 2 and 3.
