The Mastodons' only loss at the Auburn Invitational came to tournament host Auburn, who is now undefeated and ranked 19th in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) poll.
PITCHER PERFECT
This season, the trio of Mastodon starters in the circle have a combined earned run average of just 0.89 and 51 strikeouts in 55 innings of work. Leading the group has been freshman Miranda Kramer who is 1-0 with an unblemished ERA, striking out 15 batters in nine innings of work. Megan Flenniken is 1-1 with a 1.05 ERA, 16 strikeouts in 13.1 innings, to go along with a save. Courtney Cronin, the 2010 Summit League Pitcher of the Year as a sophomore, falls in third with a group-high ERA of 1.07, to go with a 4-1 record and 20 strikeouts in 32.2 innings. IPFW opponents are batting just .186 this season, and have just eight combined extra-base hits in eight games.
NO LEARNING CURVE
IPFW freshman Kayti Hanson and Mackenzie Ritsema have stepped right into starting roles for the Mastodons, and have performed amazingly, Hanson leading the team with a .389 batting average (7 hits, 18 at-bats), while her on-base percentage is a blistering .577. Ritsema is hitting .360 (9-of-25) with the team's only triple, and a .448 on-base percentage. Alex Bousquet, a sophomore is also well over .300 in the batting average column at .350 (7-of-20) with a team-high nine walks, a .533 on-base percentage and five RBI.
RECORD WATCH
With her two home runs in the first eight games, IPFW pitcher/first baseman Courtney Cronin now has 14 career home runs, tied for fourth all-time with Crystal Fisher (2000-03), who held the record for five years before former Mastodon catcher Kristina Karpun took the record. Cronin's current teammate Cassie Wolfe ranks second in career home runs at IPFW with 23, while her 73 RBI is good for third all-time. For her career, Cronin's ERA has dipped below 2.00 (1.92), as she is the school's career record holder in nearly every statistical category including ERA, wins (49), saves (4), complete games (58), shutouts (24), and strikeouts (431).
