FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW Mastodon women's basketball team nearly knocked off Oral Roberts on Saturday afternoon at the Gates Sports Center. Each team scored 27 points in the first half and matched that effort in the second, sending the game into overtime. Kevi Luper scored six points in overtime to lead the Golden Eagles to victory.
Saturday's action went back and forth for all 45 minutes. There were eight lead changes and the game was tied 11 times. Four Mastodons reached double figure scoring against Oral Roberts (18-9, 12-4 Summit). Rachel Mauk came off the bench to score a team-high 15 points, while senior Sarah Haluska recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Stephanie Rosado and Anne Boese each added 12 points for IPFW.
Kevi Luper once again showed why she is one of the top players in the Summit League scoring a game-high 22 points of 8-of-21 shooting. She went 5-for-6 from the charity stripe which led to the Oral Roberts win. Bernadett Balla and Jaci Bigham also played well for the Golden Eagles. Ball had 12 points and four rebounds, while Bigham posted eight points and seven boards.
The game was tight from the opening tip. IPFW held their largest lead of the game with 5:35 to play in the second half. Luper hit a jumper to cut the lead to five with 3:52 to play and a 3-point field goal by Luper with just over one minute remaining tied the score at 54. Each team turned the ball over in the final minute of the game, sending the action into overtime.
Luper scored the first bucket in extra time, but a set play from IPFW got Hyde in the lane for a layup to knot the score at 56-56. Bernadett Balla hit a pair of free throws to regain the lead, but Hyde would not be denied hitting another jumper with 2:36 remaining to keep IPFW in the game. The Golden Eagles went back to Luper with just over a minute to play and it worked as her jumper made the score 60-58.
Arguably the most exciting play happened moments later when Sarah Haluska recovered a missed 3-point field goal from Anne Boese to drill a three of her own from the far corner of the floor. The three gave IPFW a one point lead with just 22 second to play.
Kevi Luper attacked the basket after an IPFW 30 second timeout. She forced a foul near the baseline with 12 second on the play clock. Luper stepped up and knocked down both free throw attempts giving ORU the one point advantage. IPFW had the last shot and they ended up with a good look, but Rachel Mauk's 3-pointer was just off putting the IPFW overall record at 8-18 overall (5-10 Summit).
IPFW will return to action on Monday, Feb. 20 for senior night at the Gates Sports Center. Stephanie Rosado, Anne Boese and Sarah Haluska will all be recognized prior to tip at 7:00 p.m.
