Men's Tennis Takes Down Eastern Illinois, 6-1

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team earned a big 6-1 win over Eastern Illinois on Saturday at the Pine Ridge Racquet and Fitness Club in Fort Wayne en route to a 3-5 record on the dual season, thus far.
“The guys played excellent tennis today,” said assistant coach Brett Barnett. “It was a great team effort and I am really proud of our performance. This is a result we can build upon going forward.”
With the match starting off in doubles action, the Mastodons picked up wins at Nos. 1 and 3. The tandem of Connor Andrews and Roberto Cabrini won at No. 1, 8-4, while Andres Cobos and Joao Freitas won 8-1 at the No. 3 slot.
In singles play, IPFW continued to play in dominating fashion and managed to only drop one match. Cobos forced a three set-match at the No. 3 spot where he defeated Warren Race of GB, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Despite a close first set, Kang took down Michael Sperry at the No. 2 position, 6-4, 6-1, while Freitas had a close second set but won 6-1, 7-5 at No. 5.
The Mastodons will return to action when they take on Wright State on Saturday (Feb. 24) in Fort Wayne at the Pine Ridge Racquet and Fitness Club. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
