FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team opened its 2015 Summit League Tournament with a 4-0 win over the Western Illinois Leathernecks, advancing to the league Semifinals where they will face off against the IUPUI Jaguars in a 10 a.m. match at Empowered Sports Club on Saturday morning.
"This was a good match to start the Summit League Tournament and get our bearings in a Championship format," said assistant coach Jonathan Batuello. "Western Illinois pushed us at multiple spots and put some pressure on us which is good heading into a rematch with IUPUI tomorrow where every match during the last meeting was extremely close."
The match opened for IPFW (15-11) with a pair of doubles wins, as the No. 3 team of Connor Andrews and Derek Romer won 8-1, before Gerard Guell and Martin Muadi picked up an 8-2 victory. Andres Cobos and Daniel Cardenas were leading 7-1 at No. 2 pairs when the match was stopped after the Mastodons secured the doubles point.
Singles started well for the Mastodons, with Connor Andrews shutting out his opponent by a 6-0, 6-0 score to put IPFW ahead 2-0 in the single-elimination tournament. Karl Wangensten-Oye followed with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles, before the match was clinched - and stopped - after a Martin Muadi 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles.
The match on Saturday is a re-match of a March 14 match in which IUPUI held off a charging IPFW squad, winning 5-2 with three of the singles matches needing a third set, and two of the three doubles ran the score to 8-6.
