FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW men's tennis team has advanced to the championship match of the 2015 Summit League Tournament, topping in-state rival IUPUI 4-2 in front of a loud crowd at Empowered Sports Club.
The Mastodons will face off against defending tournament champion Denver on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. at the Dr. Rudy and Rhonda Kachmann Tennis Center.
"The guys played amazing, to turn around a 5-2 regular season loss into a win today," said IPFW coach Jonathan Batuello. "The team kept fighting. We were down a break in all three courts in doubles, but fought back to get the point and carried the momentum through to singles."
In doubles, the Jaguars picked up an 8-3 win at No. 3 before the No. 1 team of Gerard Guell and Martin Muadi fought back for an 8-4 win, knotting up the score in the battle for the doubles point. With all eyes on the No. 2 court, the team of Andres Cobos and Daniel Cardenas pulled through for an 8-4 win, giving the Mastodons the important doubles point.
In singles, Muadi made quick work of his opponent at No. 5 singles, winning 6-3, 6-1, putting the hosts ahead 2-0. IUPUI answered with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No 3 and a 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2 to tie the team score at two points apiece.
Guell, who trailed early in the first set at No. 1, fought back and won 7-5 in the opening set, before cruising in the second to a 6-2 score and putting the Mastodons ahead 3-2.
With the Mastodons a point away from the victory, and both Cardenas and Karl Wangensten-Oye the final matches on the court, it was Wangensten-Oye who scored first, winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles, securing the team victory.
The win improves IPFW to 16-11 on the season, and into the championship match of the tournament for the second straight season.
