Women's Tennis Edges EIU and GB in 4-3 Wins

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW women's tennis team picked up two big wins on Saturday when they defeated both Eastern Illinois and Green Bay 4-3 at the Pine Ridge Racquet and Fitness Club in Fort Wayne.

"I was very proud of our effort today, especially in the doubles,” said head coach Eric Burns “Both these teams played well against us and that will be the case this year. We are going to take everyone's best shot.”

With the wins over the Pantheres and the Phoenix, the Mastodons move to 3-1 on the weekend and 6-5 overall on the dual season, thus far. EIU falls to 2-4 and GB drops to 1-6.

With doubles action starting the day, the Mastodons swept the Panthers to earn the doubles point that would ultimately lead to IPFW sealing the team win.

The tandem of Marcy Huck and Caterina Kiefer highlighted the doubles matches when they edged Janelle Prisner and Merritt Whitley of EIU at the No. 1 slot, 8-6.

In tight singles matches, IPFW and EIU split the matches when both teams picked up three wins. The 'Dons earned victories at Nos. 3, 5 and 6 with the help of the IPFW senior trio.

Raquel Vescovi rolled over EIU's Jennifer Kim in a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 3 while Alex Forsyth defeated Kristen Laird at No. 5, 6-0, 6-3. At the No. 6 position, Frederique Sunstrum had a close first set but took down Annie Egan, 6-4, and then closed the win in a 6-2 second set.

Similar to earlier in the day, the Mastodons swept the Phoenix in doubles matches, which would result in the doubles point sealing the team win over GB.

In a tight match at the No. 2 spot, the IPFW pair of Forsyth and Anita Henestrosa won 8-6 while Sunstrum and Vescovi took down the No. 3 spot, 8-4.

The Mastodons split the singles matches against the Phoenix and claimed Nos. 1, 3 and 6.

Sunstrum remained undefeated on the weekend when she defeated Sam Iwen of Green Bay, 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 6 slot. Henestrosa blanked Jennifer Bradfield, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 while Marcy Huck claimed in the No. 3 spot in a 6-3, 6-1 win.

The Mastodon netters will return to action for another weekend doubleheader when they take on Wright State and Detroit on Friday (Feb. 24). The matches are set to take place at the Pine Ridge Racquet and Fitness Club in Fort Wayne with the first match against the Raiders at 11 a.m. followed by the Titans at 7 p.m.

“It is great for us to get tested with two 4-3 matches in one day this early in the season and it should give us confidence in tight matches going forward,” Burns said. “We still have a lot to work on but this weekend was a step in the right direction. Both wins were great team wins."
