GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - An Ashleigh Bousquet double with two-outs in the bottom of the seventh inning scored the final two as the IPFW Mastodons overcame a four-run deficit in the seventh inning to post a 6-5 win, securing the sweep on the day of the Oakland Grizzlies.
IPFW, which won game one by a 9-0 score, improves to 17-4 on the season, and a perfect 5-0 in Summit League play. Oakland falls to 1-14, and 0-5 in the league.
Ashleigh Bousquet and Larissa Franklin were each 3-for-7 at the plate on the day, as Bousquet drove in five, as Mackenzie Ritsema chased home four, while scoring three times. Courtney Cronin and Megan Flenniken each picked up wins, Cronin in her fourth consecutive shutout.
In the opener, the Mastodons wasted no time in reaching the scoreboard when they put up two runs in the bottom of the first inning, the first run when Franklin scored on a wild pitch before Ritsema was grought around on an Ashleigh Bousquet single, staking the 'Dons to the 2-0 advantage.
The hosts rattled off five runs in the bottom of the second inning when IPFW drew three walks from the first four batters of the frame to load the bases, before Alex Bousquet was hit by a pitch, scoring Stephanie Beuther, who opened the inning with a walk. After a line-out, Ritsema singled to center field, scoring Kayti Hanson and Dani Pugh, setting the table for Ashleigh Bousquet who singled in Ritsema and sister Alex Bousquet.
The Mastodons once again loaded the bases in the third inning with back-to-back singles to open the frame, followed by a walk. After a force-out at home plate, Beuther scored on a fielding error by the Golden Grizzly shortstop, before Alex Bousquet singled, scoring Pugh, and giving the Mastodons their comfortable 9-0 lead.
IPFW was able to keep Oakland off the board for the next two innings, giving the hosts a 9-0 five-inning victory.
Franklin and Ashleigh Bousquet were each 2-for-3 in the game, as Ashleigh Bousquet drove in three with Ritsema and Alex Bousquet each driving in two. Ritsema, Beuther, and Pugh each scored twice in the win.
Cronin, the defending Summit League Pitcher of the Week, threw her fourth consecutive shutout, while running her scoreless inning streak to 29 straight innings without allowing a run. The shutout is also her 28th of her career, as she improves to 9-1 on the season.
In the afternoon finale, Oakland starting pitcher Brittany Doyle was spectacular, holding IPFW hitless through the first four innings of the game before Cronin picked up the team's first hit with a double to right-center field.
By then, however, the Golden Grizzlies had racked up a five-run lead, highlighted by a three-run home run from Erin Galloway in the fifth inning.
After Cronin's double, she was advanced to third on a groundout by Cassie Wolfe, before scoring on a wild pitch, cutting the gap to four at 5-1. A scoreless sixth inning followed, before Oakland threatened in the top of the seventh, but came up empty, putting the Mastodons three outs away from a Golden Grizzly win.
A leadoff strikeout started the inning, before back-to-back hits from Audrey Mintari and Brittany Kachur put runners on first and second with one out. A walk to Hanson loaded the bases, as Alex Bousquet followed with another walk to score pinch-runner Jessica Haskins, and cutting the gap to three at 5-2. Franklin grounded into a fielder's choice in which Oakland got the out at home plate, before Ritsema, down to her last strike, singled up the middle to score Hanson and Alex Bousquet, and putting runners on the corners. Ashleigh Bousquet, also down to her final strike, followed by lacing a line drive into the gap in left-center field, scoring Franklin and Ritsema, and giving the game its 6-5 final score.
IPFW totaled six hits in the win, from six different bats, as six different players scored for the Mastodons.
Megan Flenniken improved to 4-2 on the season after pitching the final two and two-thirds innings of relief, striking out two and giving up one hit. Miranda Kramer got the start for IPFW and gave up five runs in four and a third inning of work, striking out two and walking two in the no-decision.
The teams meet up again on Saturday morning, with first-pitch slated for 1 p.m. at the IPFW Softball Field.
