Women’s Track and Field Earns 66 Points at Early Bird Relays

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- The IPFW women's track and field team placed fifth out of 15 teams at the 2012 Cincinnati Early Bird Relays. Sarah Hutchings and Jordan Tomecek took the top two spots in the 5000-meter run. Hutchings won with the time of 17:45.68. Tomecek's second place finish came at 18:00.42.
Cincinnati won the meet with a team score of 141. Bowling Green (77), Cedarville (74), and Dayton (67) rounded out the top four. Other teams involved in the meet included Wright State, Xavier, Northern Kentucky and Heidelberg.
Two IPFW school records were broken on Saturday. Theresa McHugh beat her own record in the javelin throw with a distance of 125-9. Kayla Zink took down the shot put record of 39-4, by reaching 41-3.25.
Hutchings placed second overall in the 3000-meter steeplechase event. She crossed the finish line at 11:18.30. Kayla Boyes also performed well in the steeplechase. She finished sixth with the time of 12:21.49.
Julie Jeszenszky and Boyes ran well in the 800-meter run. Jeszensky placed ninth with a time of 2:22.91, while Boyes ended up in 13th (2:25.69). IPFW got another ninth place finish when Hutchings finished the 1500-meter run. Hutchings finished in 4:54.37. Boyes took 13th (5:00.85).
Kaylin Taylor placed ninth in the finals of the 100-meter dash with the time of 13.19. Madelaine Baczynski also competed in the 100m. She took 20th overall crossing the finish line at 14.56. Baczynski was also active in the 200-meter dash. She placed 31st (30.03), while teammate Nicole Urdahl was just ahead in 30th (28.79). Urdahl also ran the 100-meter hurdles. She finished in 17.22 putting her in 19th place.
In the 400-meter dash it was Taylor once again leading the way for the 'Dons. She placed 14th with the time of 1:01.28. Emily Craig and Olivia Trimble also ran the 400m. Craig took 24th overall in 1:05.44 while Trimble was 27th (1:07.54).
Off the track, Katy Moore tied for fourth place overall in the women's high jump. She cleared 5-0.25 (1.53m) along with Katy Garcia of Dayton. The 'Dons got more points after another fourth place in the triple jump. Theresa McHugh's second attempt was her best (34-9). McHugh also impacted the javelin throw with a second place finish. Her throw of 125-9 (38.32m) broke her own school record of 125-1 (38.13m) set at the 2011 Stan Lyon Invitational.
Kayla Zink ended the day in fifth place in the shot put event. She made her final attempt count as she threw 41-3.25 (12.58m). Her mark set a new school record. The old record was held by Laura Williams (39-4, 11.99m). Courtney Bowen also threw the shot. She placed 15th with the distance of 34-11.
The duo of Zink and Bowen performed very well in the discus. Bowen took third with the distance of 140-0, Zink was close behind in fifth with a throw of 139-08.
