GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW Mastodons and Bowling Green Falcons came into the mid-week doubleheader knotted up in the all-time series between the two schools, and will leave the same way, as the teams split a non-conference twin-bill with the Mastodons taking game one 3-1 and Bowling Green winning the finale 3-0.
The Mastodons totaled 15 hits in the two games, led by Alex Bousquet who went 3-for-5, while Larissa Franklin and Mackenzie Ritsema each went 3-for-7. IPFW put 15 on base in the game via hit, five more via error, 1 by walk and six by hit-by-pitch, and stranded 21 of those batters over the two games.
With the split, IPFW improves to 20-6 on the season, while Bowling Green goes to 15-9.
In the opener, Bowling Green wasted little time in reaching the scoreboard when Andrea Arney singled home Hannah Fulk, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead after one inning. For the next four innings, the teams traded zeros on the board, despite IPFW loading the bases in both the third and fourth innings, only to come up empty in each frame.
In the sixth, IPFW got an inning-opening single from Alex Bousquet, before Cassie Wolfe followed a batter later with a single of her own. Kayti Hanson next reached on a throwing error by the Bowling Green pitcher, before the game was knotted up an inning later when Brittany Kachur reached on a fielding error. Ritsema followed a batter later with a single that scored Wolfe, before Ashleigh Bousquet was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to push around Hanson, and giving IPFW a 3-1 lead.
Bowling Green got one hit in the top of the seventh, but that was with two outs, and she was left stranded for first, as IPFW took the opening game 3-1.
Alex Bousquet went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, while three players: Hanson, Ritsema and Franklin each had two hits. Courtney Cronin picked up the win, improving to 11-2 on the year as she scattered five hits, giving up just the one run in the first inning, striking out three and walking two.
In the nightcap, IPFW threatened in the bottom of the second inning, stranding Alex Bousquet at third base with two outs. An inning later the 'Dons stranded two more runners in scoring position, before leaving the bases loaded an inning later, as the game remained tied at 0-0 through four full innings.
Back-to-back errors by IPFW to open the fifth inning put runners on the corners, as each player eventually scored, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead. An inning later the Falcons tacked on another run with an inning-opening home run from Andrea Arney, giving the visitors a 3-0 lead.
IPFW put two more runners on in the bottom of the fifth, and two more in the sixth, but each was left stranded on base in the loss.
The Mastodons had four total hits in the nightcap, one each from Ritsema, Franklin, Audrey Mintari, and Kachur, as Megan Flenniken picked up the loss, striking out five in seven innings of work, scattering four hits and walking two, while giving up just one earned run.
IPFW returns to action on Saturday, March 24 when the team travels to Kansas City, Mo., to face off in a Summit League three-game series with the Kangaroos of UMKC.
