FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW baseball team is now on a two-game winning streak after defeating Nebraska Omaha by the final score of 6-3 on Saturday afternoon. IPFW scored five runs in the third inning to take a 5-2 lead. They added an insurance run in the sixth to pick up their seventh win of the season.
Malcolm White continued to swing a hot bat on Saturday as he ended the day with a 2-for-3 performance from the plate. White had three RBI in Friday's contest, but in Saturday's game it was Shane Trevino and Kristian Gayday leading the team with two RBI each. Trevino hit a two RBI single in the fifth and Gayday followed in the lineup with a two RBI single of his own giving the 'Dons the lead.
Lucas Salerno jump started the sixth inning with a two-out single through the right side of the infield. Clay Hathaway followed in the lineup to deliver the hardest hit of the day. Hathaway nearly missed a home run as the ball connected with the top of the fence. The ball took a hard bounce off the wall, and Hathaway tried for third base. Salerno scored easily, but Hathaway was gunned down at third after a nice throw from left field.
Jason Kalber was on the mound for IPFW on Saturday. He earned his fourth win of the season against the Mavericks. Kalber threw 7.2 innings in the win and struck out five. Steve Danielak entered the game from the bullpen to throw the final 1.1 innings. He picked up his third save of the season.
Nebraska Omaha scored two runs in the top of the first inning to grab the lead. Colby McCord and Mark Waldron each recorded base hits and a two RBI double from Alex Mortensen would send both runners home.
The duo of Trevino and Gayday gave IPFW the lead after five, and Danielak slammed the door on the Nebraksa Omaha comeback as the Mastodons improve to 7-17 on the year. The final game of the series will be played tomorrow, April 1 at noon.
