Bousquet's Dominate in Series Split with Thunderbirds

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - In a battle of the top hitting team against the top pitching team in the Summit League, the roles reversed on Friday afternoon, as IPFW - who lead the League in pitching - erupted for 12 runs in a 12-4 run-rule victory; while Southern Utah - who leads the Summit League in batting - got a no-hitter from game two starter Danielle Axe in a 1-0 Thunderbird win.
Behind the series-opening win, the Mastodons improve to 30-10 on the season and 9-5 in the Summit League, a new single-season school record for wins in a season, topping the previous mark of 29 set in 2010. Southern Utah goes to 25-18 with the split, and 11-6 in Summit League play.
Things looked bleak for IPFW in the early goings of game one, as the Thunderbirds scored once in the top of the first inning, and then three more times in the top of the third and had the bases loaded with two outs before relief pitcher Miranda Kramer struck out Madison Resley to keep the deficit to four at 4-0.
The bottom of the second inning saw the Mastodons climb to within three on a perfectly executed sacrifice squeeze off the bat of Audrey Mintari, scoring Ashleigh Bousquet.
After a 1-2-3 top of the third inning in which Kramer struck out two Thunderbirds, the 'Dons got a leadoff single from Larissa Franklin and a walk from Kayti Hanson, before Alex Bousquet h it her sixth home run of the season over the wall in left-center field to tie the game at four runs apiece. A batter later, Dani Pugh hammered her fourth home run of the season, keeping it just inside of the left-field foul pole, and staking IPFW to a 5-4 lead through three innings.
The teams traded scoreless innings in the fourth, and Kramer once again struck out two in the fifth before Ashleigh Bousquet singled home her sister, before scoring on Courtney Cronin's second double of the game and 12th of the year to push the margin to three at 7-4.
A half-inning later, the 'Dons loaded the bases with one out on a single to left field, an infield single, and a hit by pitch, before Alex Bousquet scored the first two - Brittany Kachur and Franklin. After a groundout advanced the remaining baserunners a base, before Ashleigh Bousquet cleaned up the rest of the baserunners with a game-ending three-run home run, scoring herself, her sister, and Hanson.
Three players for IPFW, Alex Bousquet, Ashleigh Bousquet, and Franklin, each had three hits, Alex Bousquet going 3-for-3 and the other two 3-for-4, while the Bousquet's each scored three times, as Franklin and Hanson scored twice apiece. Alex Bousquet drove in five runs, while Ashleigh had four RBI's, as the twins had nine of the team's 12 RBI's.
Kramer improved to 6-3 on the season after pitching the final four and a third inning, giving up just one hit, walking one, and striking out six. Cronin started the game and had her roughest outing of the season, giving up four runs in an inning and two-thirds, striking out one and giving up six hits, raising her season ERA from 0.94 to 1.16.
In the afternoon finale, Southern Utah got a two-out solo home run from shortstop Kelsey Bryant to provide the only runs of the contest.
Three innings saw IPFW put a runner on base, the first inning after a walk to Alex Bousquet, the second when Cronin reached on an error, and the seventh when Ashleigh Bousquet reached on a fielding error, both errors coming from Axe. Those two errors, however, would be the only dark spot in a remarkable day, as the junior struck out five, and walked just the one batter in earning the no-hitter.
IPFW starting pitcher Megan Flenniken was stellar in the circle, giving up just three hits, one run, while striking out three, but the Mastodon offense could not put together any run support behind her.
The teams meet on Saturday morning in the rubber-match of the three-game series. The game time has been changed to 11:30 a.m. to attempt to get the game in against an impending storm coming through the area tomorrow.
