BOX SCORE
INDIANAPOLIS - IPFW freshman pitcher Miranda Kramer took a perfect game into the bottom of the seventh inning, giving up her first hit with one out in the inning, before giving up a walk and a two-run double; and an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth kept the Mastodons from the series sweep with a 3-2 Jaguar win.
Kramer went seven innings, striking out eight and giving up two hits, and giving up three runs while Courtney Cronin game in and got two outs in the bottom of the eighth before the winning run was scored.
The Mastodons threatened in each of the first two innings, before finally converting in the third inning when shortstop Alex Bousquet hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Jessica Haskins.
The teams would trade zeros on the scoreboard until Brittany Kachur doubled home Larissa Franklin in the top of the seventh inning to give the Mastodons a two-run cushion in the game.
Franklin got bottom of the seventh leadoff batter Nicole Checkie to pop up to second base, before Kelsey Rupert singled through the left side, ending both the perfect game and the no-hit bid. Ashley Seering proceeded to draw a walk in the next at-bat, before Eryn Dillon grounded out to Alex Bousquet at shortstop. Down to their last chance, Leah Prewitt drove a pitch that seemed to clear the left field wall; however, Mastodon left fielder Kachur brought the ball back into play, robbing Prewitt of a home run, but was unable to keep ahold of the ball as she landed on the warning track, allowing the two runners to score, sending the game to an eighth inning.
Mastodons went down 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth, before Lindsay Richards drew an inning-opening walk. Kramer was then lifted for relief pitcher Cronin, who drew a fielder's choice and a pop-up, before Checkie singled down the left field line, scoring Emili Escamilla, and giving the hosts the one-run win.
Franklin was 2-for-2 while Kachur was 2-for-3 for IPFW, as the team's only other hit in the game came on a double from Ashleigh Bousquet, who added her fourth extra-base hit of the series, as the sophomore was 5-for-7 at the plate in the three-game series with the Jaguars, walking four times and earning two more bases on hit by pitches.
The loss drops IPFW to 39-12 on the season and 14-7 in Summit League play, while IUPUI improves to 18-32 and 7-14 in league action. Despite the loss, the Mastodons have clinched a berth into the 2012 Summit League championships, and continue to sit in a tie for second place in the league standings with Southern Utah University.
The Mastodons return to action on Friday, May 4, with a doubleheader against the Coyotes of South Dakota.
