GAME ONE BOX SCORE | GAME TWO BOX SCORE
DETROIT - Megan Flenniken flirted with a no-hitter, while Ashleigh Bousquet was 4-for-7 with five RBI in the doubleheader sweep over the Detroit Titans at Buysse Ballpark by scores of 4-2 and 9-1.
Flenniken struck out seven in the win, allowing just two hits and one run over the seven innings of work. Ashleigh Bousquet drove in four in the afternoon finale, including a three-run home run, while Flenniken was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, picking up more hits at the plate than she allowed in the circle in the contest.
With the wins, IPFW improves to 27-9 on the season, while Detroit falls to 7-24.
The Mastodons wasted little time in reaching the scoreboard, as leadoff hitter Alex Bousquet walked, was advanced to second on a single by Larissa Franklin, and then to third on a sacrifice bunt by twin sister Ashleigh Bousquet. Mackenzie Ritsema followed with a sacrifice squeeze, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
A second run in the top of the second gave IPFW a 2-0 lead when Audrey Mintari drew a walk, was advanced on back-to-back hit by pitches, and scored on a fielding error by the Titan shortstop.
Detroit countered with an unearned run in the bottom of the third inning, cutting the deficit in half; however, two runs by the Mastodons in the top of the fourth pushed the lead to three at 4-1. The 'Dons put together four straight singles, the last two by Ashleigh Bousquet and Ritsema to score Alex Bousquet and Franklin, respectively.
A wild pitch would score the final run of the game for Detroit in the bottom of the seventh, but that was all the hosts could muster in the 4-2 defeat.
Franklin and Ashleigh Bousquet each had two hits, while Alex Bousquet scored twice and Ritsema drove in two. Cronin improved to 14-5 on the year, striking out 10, walking four, scattering five hits, and allowing just one earned run. Detroit Titan starting pitcher Karyn McCarty fell to 2-6 in picking up the loss.
In the nightcap, Ashleigh Bousquet started the scoring with a three-run home run to right-center field, driving in herself, her twin, and Franklin, giving the 'Dons a 3-0 lead.
A double to right-center field in the fifth inning pushed home the game's fourth run, before Cronin doubled home Bousquet for a 5-0 advantage. An infield single and a walk followed to load the bases with one out. After a swinging strikeout, Kayti Hanson hit an infield single to score Cronin, before Alex Bousquet was hit by a pitch, her third of the game, pushing around Audrey Mintari, and giving the 'Dons a 7-0 advantage.
Two more runs in the top of the seventh, the first when Hanson hit a groundout to score Flenniken, and the latter when Alex Bousquet hit a looper into right field, scoring Miranda Kramer, who picked up her first collegiate hit on a double earlier in the inning.
Flenniken saw her no-hit bid ended with the leadoff batter in the seventh inning, as the sophomore gave up two hits and one run, snapping a different bid for her second collegiate shutout.
Flenniken picked up a team-high three hits, while Franklin and Ashleigh Bousquet once again had two hits, while each scoring twice. Ashleigh Bousquet drove in four in the winning effort, while Alex Bousquet had two RBI, including her school-record 18th hit by pitch of the season, which moves her to third in the Summit League single-season record book.
The Mastodons get the weekend off before returning to action in a doubleheader at the University of Toledo on April 11 starting at 3 p.m.
