CHICAGO - The IPFW Mastodon men's soccer team fell via a goal with less than two minutes remaining in the game, falling in a non-conference battle with the Loyola Ramblers on Friday afternoon.
The loss drops IPFW to 0-6 on the season, while Loyola improves to 1-4.
IPFW and Loyola battled through the first 45 minutes with the Ramblers putting up nine shots and IPFW picking up two, as both teams came up empty on their nearly dozen combined attempts.
The Mastodons peppered Loyola goaltender Peter McKeown with nine shot attempts, four shots on goal, including a final attempt at goal with three and a half minutes left in the game on a header from Brent Helton that was saved.
Loyola snapped the Mastodon shutout bid with 1:48 on the clock when Jake Savino beat IPFW keeper Brandon Cloutier from five yards out, giving the Ramblers their first win of the season. IPFW was unable to put up a shot in the final two minutes to provide the equalizer in the 1-0 Loyola win.
Cloutier had a game-high five saves, while Mitch Falkenstern had a team-best three shot attempts, two of which came on goal.
The Mastodons return to action on Sunday, September 16 when the squad travels to Dayton, Ohio to face off against the Flyers of Dayton in a 1 p.m. kickoff.
