IPFW Takes 3-1 Win Over Central Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The IPFW women's volleyball team improved to 10-3 overall with a 3-1 win over Central Michigan on Saturday night (25-23, 27-25, 23-25, 25-23).
The duo of Kendall Wienkes and Jessie Manwaring led IPFW to victory. Wienkes tied her career-high total with 20 kills while adding three service aces, six digs, and three blocks. Manwaring recorded 13 kills and four blocks.
Tessa McGill and Jen Milligan led the defensive charge for IPFW. McGill recorded 16 digs, and Milligan was close behind with 11. Seniors Megan Steenhuysen and Haley Emenhiser also impacted the game. Steenhuysen ended the night with 48 assists and Emenhiser recorded 10 kills.
IPFW made a statement early in the first set by winning the first four points. The Chippewas responded by cutting the IPFW lead to just two, but the Mastodons held off the surge and pushed the advantage to 14-10 as the teams approached the midway point. The Chippewas tied the game at 16-16 and it would turn into a battle the rest of the way as the two programs remain tied at 23-23. Kendall Wienkes and Haley Emenhiser recorded the final two kills of the set as IPFW grabbed a 1-0 lead 25-23.
Central Michigan got out to a fast start in the second set. The Chippewas enjoyed a 3-0 lead before a Hailie Ripley kill put IPFW on the scoreboard. IPFW trailed CMU for a majority of the second set. Wienkes tied the game for the first time at 16-16 and another Wienkes kill gave IPFW their first lead at 17-16. Neither team was able to pull away as the score remained tied at 25-25. Wienkes was the player of the game in the second set as the sophomore delivered back-to-back kills giving the 'Dons a 2-0 lead 27-25.
Central Michigan avoided the sweep by pulling out a 25-23 win in the third set. The game was close from start to finish as the largest lead held by either team was three points. IPFW held a 23-22 lead late in the set, but the Chippewas got two straight points on kills from Kaitlyn McIntyre and Danielle Gotham. An IPFW attack error pushed the match to 2-1.
The fourth set was more back and forth action. The turning point came towards the middle of the set when IPFW rattled off four-straight points taking the score from 13-11 to 17-11. Central Michigan chipped away at the lead and a three point scoring streak got them within three 20-17. The Mastodons used a team effort pushing the score to 24-20 and senior Jessie Manwaring put the finishing touches on the match with a kill giving IPFW the 3-1 victory (25-22).
IPFW will return to the Gates Sports Center on Tuesday, Sept. 18 with a match against the IUPUI Jaguars. The match will be the first Summit League home game of the season. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
