BOX SCORE
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Mastodons scored an equalizing goal in the 72nd minute of the game, and forced an overtime, before the Kansas City Kangaroos hit the back of the net with just under two minutes left in the first overtime, as IPFW fell 2-1 in overtime on Saturday afternoon in each teams' Summit League opener.
The loss drops IPFW to 0-9 on the season and 0-1 in Summit League action, while Kansas City improves to 2-4-2 and 1-0-0 in league play.
The teams closed the game with an equal amount of shots (10), corner kicks (5), and saves (3).
The 'Roos struck quickly in the game on a goal with 22:19 gone off of the clock, when Mo Ramahi hit a cross to Ashley Reece on the back post, who one-touched the ball to David Sarabia, who beat IPFW keeper Brandon Cloutier, giving the hosts a 1-0 advantage.
The remaining 22-plus minutes of the opening half went scoreless, with three shots coming from the Kangaroos, two of which were saved by Cloutier.
The second half started just like the first one ended, in a battle of scoreless time, before Jose Rodriguez picked up a turnover in the Kansas City back line, and found Corey Tom for an easy finish, knotting the score at 1-1 with 17:18 left to play in the game, for his second goal of the season.
Neither team would find the back of the net the rest of the way, despite a shot from IPFW's Mitch Falkenstern, and two from UMKC that were off the mark.
In the team's first overtime match of the season, the Mastodons put a shot on goal nearly halfway through the extra session when Brent Helton's shot attempt was saved, while Rodriguez' nearly a minute later went wide.
With 1:59 to play in the contest, Tom McCarthy dribbled to the top of the box, passing the ball off to his left, finding Jordan Rideout who one-timed the ball into the back of the net for the game-winning goal.
Three players - Zach Rodgers, Brent Helton, and Mitch Falkenstern - each had two shots for IPFW, with Rodgers, Kyle Ackerman, Helton, and Tom each putting a shot on goal. Brandon Cloutier had three saves in the match.
The Mastodons return to action on Tuesday, September 25 for the first of two consecutive home matches for the Mastodons, when IPFW hosts the Kentucky Wildcats at 7 p.m., before hosting Oral Roberts in a Summit League contest on Friday, September 28.
