Women’s Tennis Loses Home Opener 5-2 to Eastern Michigan

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW women's tennis team fell to Eastern Michigan 5-2 on Saturday afternoon at the Pine Ridge Racquet and Fitness Club. The Mastodons are now 0-2 early in the season.
"We battled extremely hard against another strong MAC school, but came up a little short," said Head Coach Eric Burns. "Eastern Michigan is a good team, but we had chances to win this match which is all I could ask for. I'm proud of our team's effort this weekend and getting these types of experiences will help us prepare for championship match scenarios we may see later in the season."
The Mastodons earned the first point of the day by winning two of three in doubles competition. The No. 2 Doubles team of Theresa Neumeyr and Miloslava Shustova defeated Daphne Friedrichs and Mariya Toncheva 8-3, but Eastern Michigan quickly evened the playing field as Zsofia Biro and Ankita Bhatia dropped Kristine Lindal and Marcy Huck 8-2 in No. 3 Doubles.
The deciding factor came down to No. 1 Doubles as Anita Henestrosa and Caterina Kiefer gave IPFW the win over Nino Mebuke and Klara Supejova 8-7.
Eastern Michigan gained momentum in singles action as Klara Supejova quickly defeated Kristine Lindal 6-2, 6-0 in No. 2 Singles and Ankita Bhatia made it 2-0 with a win over Marcy Huck in No. 5 Singles 6-1, 6-3.
IPFW got on the board with a win from Miloslava Shustova as she knocked off Zsofia Biro 6-4, 6-0 in No. 6 Singles, but that was the only singles win of the day for the 'Dons as Eastern Michigan pulled out the 5-2 win.
Theresa Neumeyr represented IPFW in No. 4 Singles. She was defeated by Mariya Toncheva 7-5, 6-3.
It looked like IPFW had good chances to pick up wins in No. 3 and No. 1 Singles as each player won the first set, but the Eagles bounced back to take the match with victories. Caterina Kiefer was defeated by Daphne Friedrichs in No. 3 Singles 6-2, 2-6, 3-6 and Anita Henestrosa was defeated by Nino Mebuke in No. 1 Singles 6-2, 5-7, 2-6.
IPFW will return to the courts next weekend as they host Evansville on Feb. 2.
