FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW Mastodons moved to a perfect 6-0 at home this season with a sweep of the Toledo Rockets by scores of 25-22, 25-17, 26-24, evening the team's record to 10-10 on the season.
The last IPFW home loss came on October 12, 2012, and the team is 36-5 since 2010, and 179-39 at home since 1996 (82.1 win percentage).
Emily Spencer recorded her ninth straight double-figure kill effort with 17 against the Rockets, while Kendall Wienkes added a dozen for the Mastodons, who hit .245 as a team (44 kills, 18 errors, 106 attempts). Madison Spence dished out 39 assists, as Jen Milligan had a match-high 18 digs. Somer Johnson recorded a career-high five blocks, as Summit League Player of the Week Hailie Ripley had four for the 'Dons.
Toledo jumped out quickly in the match, taking out to a 3-1 lead before the Mastodons rallied to take a 6-4 lead. Toledo would answer back, scoring five of six points during a stretch to lead by two at 9-7. Down by two, IPFW rallied with five consecutive points, taking a 12-10 lead, and would not trail again in the set. Toledo tied the match at 12 and 13; however, another stretch by IPFW, a 5-0 streak, put the Mastodons ahead for good, as the team held on late for a 25-22 first-set win.
IPFW ran off the first six points of the second set, and never looked back, despite a late rally by the Rockets that closed the gap from 19-9 to 21-16; however, the early deficit was too much to overcome as the Mastodons cruised to a 25-17 second-set victory.
The third and final set saw nine tie scores and two lead changes, as the visitors jumped ahead to a 15-9 advantage, before the Mastodons started to chip away at the deficit. The squad used a series of 2-0 and 3-0 runs, forcing a Toledo sideout on six straight serves, a span which saw the 'Dons turn a six point deficit into a 23-21 lead, capped by a Jen Milligan ace.
Trailing for the first time since IPFW led 6-5 early in the match, Toledo answered back with two straight points, tying the score at 23, as the teams also found themselves tied at 24 before a kill by Spencer, and a combo block by Johnson and Sarah Heckman closed the door on the match for IPFW's 26-24 win.
Lauren Rafdal had a team-high 10 kills, while Adria Pryor dished out 26 assists, as Becca Reidy added 11 digs.
The Mastodons take to the road for the squad's next three matches, including a Saturday early evening meeting with the IUPUI Jaguars at 5 p.m.
