WICHITA, Kan. - The IPFW women's basketball team had a rough go at it in their season opener, as a first half scoring drought dropped the 'Dons 69-46 to Wichita State in the Preseason WNIT.
The Mastodons hit just 3-of-17 in the first half including going the last 11:56 without a field goal as they scored their fourth fewest points in a first half in school history.
Amanda Hyde led the Mastodons with 13 points while also pulling down five rebounds. Haley Seibert and freshman Rachel Rinehart each added 10 points.
After an opening basket by the Shockers, Seibert drained IPFW's first shot of the season as she hit a three to score the 'Dons their first points of the 2013-14 season and also giving them their first lead of the year.
The Mastodons led by three at 5-2 after a pair of free throws by Hyde. After exchanging points, the Shockers took an 11-10 advantage and the 'Dons were unable to recover. Trailing by two, WSU extended their lead to 26-12 off a 12-0 run. Seibert would finally end the drought as she hit the back-end of a double-bonus as the 'Dons trailed 26-13 with 4:41 left in the opening half. IPFW would head into the break trailing the Shockers 37-13.
Hyde would end the field goal drought in the second half as she made the 'Dons first shot of the half, and converted on the and-one opportunity. The tough times would continue though for the 'Dons as seven more minutes ticked off the clock until IPFW would hit another field goal as Hyde scored on a jumper with 11:40 to play in the half. At the 6:22 mark, Rinehart would score her first career collegiate basket on a layup as the Mastodons trailed it 60-30 at that time.
IPFW would keep pace with the Shockers over the course of the final minutes as they out-scored Wichita State 33-32 in the second half.
For the game, IPFW shot 11-of-38 from the floor, 2-of-14 from beyond the arc and 22-of-36 from the free throw line.
Stefanie Mauk led the 'Dons with eight rebounds while twin sister Rachel Mauk pulled down six of her own. Courtney Ogle had the lone assists for IPFW, tying a team record low for a single game. In all, 12 different players saw time for the Mastodons in the opener.
The Mastodons now return to Fort Wayne for their home opener as they host Indiana University on Tuesday, November 12 for a 7 p.m. tip-off.
