AMES, Iowa - After being swept in their season opener, the IPFW softball squad used offense and key pitching to rally to sweep the second day of competition, topping tournament host Iowa State 8-5 before winning the late evening tournament finale against North Dakota by a 6-0 score.
Megan Flenniken and Ashleigh Bousquet each went 4-for-7 at the plate, while Miranda Kramer was 3-for-7, as Bousquet and Kramer each drove in three runs on the day. Flenniken and Kramer each picked up a win on the day, as each struck out seven in seven innings of work.
In the opener, the Mastodons found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-0 score through three innings of the game.
Trailing by three, the IPFW offense came alive in the top of the fourth, as Kramer opened the inning with a single, before Dani Pugh drove herself and Kramer home with the team's first home run of the season, cutting the gap to 3-2. After a Flenniken double, she was advanced to third on a groundout by Audrey Mintari. Hillary Kartman proceeded to walk and steal second base, as Flenniken scored the tying run on a fielding error by the shortstop on the play. A Larissa Franklin single put runners on the corners, before Franklin stole second base.
A wild pitch put the Mastodons ahead as Kartman scored, before a groundout put the second out on the board. IPFW's career hit-by-pitch leader Alex Bousquet was hit by a pitch for the third time in three games this season, before stealing second base to put two runners in scoring position. The two runners each advanced a base - Franklin scoring - on a passed ball, before Ashleigh Bousquet homered scoring herself and her twin. A Kramer fly-out mercifully ended the inning, as the 'Dons totaled seven runs on five hits in the frame.
Iowa State countered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the deficit to two at 7-5, before Kayti Hanson drew a bases-loaded walk to score Mintari and give the 'Dons an 8-5 lead, one that would hold on for the remainder of the contest, as Kramer allowed just a solitary walk over the final three innings to pick up the win and even her record at 1-1 on the season.
Franklin and Ashleigh Bousquet each went 2-for-4 in the game, while Bousquet and Pugh drove in two. Kramer scattered seven hits, giving up five runs (four earned), while striking out seven and walking two, improving her record to 1-1 on the year.
In the nightcap against North Dakota, Flenniken was stellar in the circle, scatting three hits and striking out seven, picking up her third career shutout in the process.
The teams shared three straight scoreless innings before IPFW opened the fourth inning with a walk from Alex Bousquet, as Ashleigh Bousquet followed with a single, with Alex scoring on a throwing error by the UND right fielder. Kramer followed with a two-run home run a batter later, taking IPFW to a 3-0 lead.
The 'Dons scored next in the bottom of the sixth inning as Alex Bousquet, Ashleigh Bousquet, and Kramer opened the inning with back-to-back-to-back doubles. Pugh followed with a single; but IPFW pinch-runner Taylor Gordy Prescott was gunned down by the UND right fielder at the plate.
Pugh's pinch-runner, Prestlee Cooper advanced to third on a wild pitch, before scoring on a Flenniken single, as the inning ended on a pair of fielders choices.
Flenniken set UND down in order in the top of the seventh with two strikeouts and a groundout to improve her record to 1-1 on the year. In addition to her stellar play in the circle, she also dominated in the batters box, going 3-for-3 with an RBI, while Ashleigh Bousquet and Kramer each were 2-for-3, with Kramer driving in three.
The Mastodons return to Fort Wayne, for the week, before taking to the road in Albuquerque, N.M. for a five-game tournament hosted by New Mexico.
