IPFW Baseball at SIUE this Weekend

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW baseball team will face Southern Illinois-Edwardsville in a four-game series this weekend. Game one on Friday has been moved up to 3 p.m. due to the weather forecast.
The two teams will face off in a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. and action will wrap up on Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
IPFW is 2-5 overall early in the 2013 season. The Mastodons won their season opener 2-0 over Indiana State and they picked up their second win of the year in game two of a doubleheader at Alabama A&M.
The Mastodons most recently lost three games at UT-Martin. All three games were decided by one run. The Skyhawks won Saturday's contest 5-4 and took two on a Sunday doubleheader 1-0, 4-3.
Markus Kalber is off to a great start to the season. Kalber is batting .538 (14-for-26) through the first seven games of the season. Half of Kalber's hits have been doubles. He has one RBI and 21 total bases.
Steve Lowden and Clay Hathaway have also been bright spots in the IPFW lineup. Lowden is second on the team with a .320 batting average and Hathaway is third at .296. Hathaway has two doubles and a triple giving him five RBI's on the season.
Shane Trevino and Evan VanSumeren have added power to the lineup. Each player has five RBI's on the season. Trevino has two home runs on the year and VanSumeren has a triple.
Brandon Pease and Jason Kalber each have two starts under their belt on the mound for IPFW. Pease enters the weekend with a 3.72 ERA and eight strikeouts. Kalber has a 4.15 ERA and seven strikeouts.
Danny Tursell and Steve Danielak each have a win on the mound. Tursell holds a 1.69 ERA and Danielak is at 10.50. Danielak moved into the starting rotation this season after closing games a year ago.
The Cougars enter the weekend with an overall record of 1-6. They split on opening weekend against Lipscomb taking an 11-4 loss in the opener followed by a 3-2 win the next day. SIUE is currently on a four-game losing streak with three losses coming at Ark. Little Rock and the other vs. Kansas.
SIUE has three players hitting .300 or better. Senior Matt Highland leads the club with a .318 average. He has seven hits on 22 at bats. Highland has one RBI and has also walked five times. Jake Michalak and Devin Caldwell are also posting high batting averages. Caldwell has one of SIUE's two home runs. Freshman Ryan Mansfield leads the team with three doubles.
