AMES, Iowa - The IPFW Mastodons dropped their first two games of the 2013 season on Friday afternoon, falling 9-0 to Indiana State and 5-4 to Northern Colorado.

Miranda Kramer and Megan Flenniken each went 2-for-4 at the plate on the day, while Audrey Mintari was 2-for-6.

Against the Sycamores, sophomore pitcher Kramer struck out seven in three innings of work, giving up three hits and three runs scored.

Indiana State scored three times in the second inning, twice more in the fifth, and four times in the sixth, giving the game its 9-0 final score after six innings.

The Mastodons mustered just two hits in the opener, one each from Mintari and Hillary Kartman. Kramer picked up the loss, while Sara Lazarowich went the final three innings, striking out two and walking one.

In the day finale against Northern Colorado, the Mastodons took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Flenniken tripled home Dani Pugh.

Northern Colorado answered four times in the bottom of the third inning, and once more in the bottom of the fifth, giving the Bears a 5-1 advantage.

IPFW cut into the gap in the top of the sixth when Flenniken singled, scoring Kramer, cutting the deficit to 5-2.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Mastodons got back-to-back doubles from Ashleigh Bousquet and Kramer to drive home Kayti Hanson and Bousquet, closing to within one at 5-4, but a pop-up to second base ended the game for the 'Dons.

Kramer and Flenniken were each 2-for-3, Flenniken driving in a pair, and each of the team's four runs coming from four different batters.

Flenniken picked up the loss in the pitching circle, striking out six in six innings of work, scattering seven hits and five runs.

The Mastodons return to action on Saturday when the squad faces Iowa State at 4:30 p.m. and North Dakota at 8:30 p.m. in Ames.
