IPFW Baseball Ends Ball State Series with a 9-2 Loss

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The IPFW baseball team gave up six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning which led to a 9-2 loss to Ball State on Sunday afternoon. The Mastodons are now 6-10 overall.
Tyler Shepherd and Clay Hathaway each recorded two hits against the Cardinals. IPFW was limited to just five hits total as Kendall Whitman went 1-for-2.
Ball State scored a run in the second inning and added two more in the third. The Cardinals played small ball to get the first run across home plate and back-to-back doubles extended the lead in the third.
The Mastodons scored a run in the top of the seventh inning, but Ball State responded by scoring six. Two walked batters and a BSU error helped the Mastodons get on the scoreboard, but the Cardinals dominated the second half of the inning.
IPFW loaded the bases in the top of the ninth inning as two walked batters and an error got players into scoring position. Ball State made a pitching change and Michael Sandman came in to strike out the first two batters he faced. Shepherd broke the strikeout streak with an RBI single to the left side of the infield, but the game would end with the next batter grounding out to the shortstop.
Ball State is now 13-1 all-time against the Mastodons. The Cardinals have won the last 10 meetings in a series that began back in 1996. This three-game series is the first time the two teams have faced off since the 2009 season.
Steve Danielak was on the hill for IPFW on Sunday. He threw six full innings and ended the day with two strikeouts and three walks. He allowed six hits which turned into three earned runs. Kyle Sorensen and Connor McLaughlin pitched the final two innings of the game. McLaughlin was good out of the pen, striking out one batter as he did not allow a hit.
IPFW will return to action next weekend with a three-game road series at Alabama A&M. The first game will take place on March 22, at 6 p.m.
