FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW baseball team will play Alabama State in a three-game series this weekend starting on Friday, March 22. The first two games will be played at 6 p.m. and the final game will begin at 1 p.m. at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
IPFW is 6-10 overall after a four-game weekend series. Ball State swept IPFW in three games, but the Mastodons grabbed a 7-5 win at Taylor on Saturday.
Tyler Shepherd has emerged in the IPFW lineup and is now leading the team with a .340 batting average. Shepherd has appeared in 13 games with 12 starts. He is 16-for-47 from the plate with six RBI's.
Markus Kalber, Clay Hathaway and Shane Trevino have also impacted the lineup. Kalber leads the team with seven doubles and is second on the team with a .310 batting average. He and Hathaway have started in all 16 games. Hathaway has four doubles and six RBI's on the year, he is hitting .262. The power hitter in the lineup so far this season has been Trevino. He posts a .457 slugging percentage and leads the team with two home runs.
The IPFW pitching rotation this weekend will feature Jason Kalber, Chuck Weaver, and Brandon Pease. Kalber is off to a 0-2 start on the mound with an ERA of 3.00. He leads the team with 24 innings pitched through five starts. Pease is also looking for his first win, but the newcomer holds an ERA of 1.57. Weaver is 1-1 early in the season with an ERA of 5.40. He is the team leader in strikeouts with 22. .
Alabama State is 14-8 overall with a 10-4 home record. They most recently played a road game at Auburn before hosting eight-straight. The Tigers defeated the Hornets 10-2, but the home stand went well for Alabama State as they swept a three-game series vs. Alabama A&M after losing a tough 1-0 game vs. Jacksonville State.
A single game vs. South Alabama was a setback for the Hornets, but they responded by taking two of three from Jackson State.
Cold weather shouldn't be an issue this weekend as the Hornets hosted four games at the beginning of the season from Feb. 15-19. The forecast does however call for a chance of rain, including a 50 percent chance on Saturday. Any changes to the IPFW schedule will be announced on gomastodons.com.
