Mastodon Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Butler

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The IPFW baseball team split a doubleheader in Indianapolis, Ind. on Saturday against the Butler Bulldogs. A triple gave Butler a 1-0 win in the first game, but IPFW came back to win the nightcap 4-3 in 11 innings.
IPFW was held to just one hit in the first game, which was played at Bishop Chatard H.S. due to Butler's field being covered in snow. Malcolm White picked up the hit for IPFW, but the 'Dons stayed in the game as Jason Kalber only surrendered four hits to the Bulldogs.
Kalber struck out three and walked one in five innings of work. Danny Tursell entered the game for the final inning of the game as the two teams only played seven in game one.
The deciding factor in game one came in the fifth inning as Caponi tripled to center field with one out in the inning. Guinane followed in the order with an RBI single up the middle to give Butler the 1-0 win.
The 'Dons broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the 11th inning to win game two on Saturday. Clay Hathaway got the inning going with a single to leftfield and a sacrifice bunt from Shane Trevino moved Hathaway into scoring position.
After a pop fly to leftfield, freshman Brandon Soat came to the plate to deliver an RBI single to left centerfield giving IPFW the win.
IPFW ended game two with four hits. Tyler Shepherd recorded two RBI's in the win and the top part of the order was responsible for scoring all four runs.
Chuck Weaver got the start in the nightcap, but it was Travis Reboulet who ended up with the win. Reboulet threw four innings and didn't allow any runs on two hits. Kyle Sorensen earned his second save of the season by shutting out Butler in the 11th inning.
IPFW will end the weekend with one more game versus Butler tomorrow at Bishop Chatard H.S.
