INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The IPFW baseball team improved to 5-7 overall with a 2-1 victory at Butler on Sunday afternoon. The Mastodons scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning to steal the win.

Evan VanSumeren singled to right centerfield with a runner on first near the start the ninth inning. A pinch hitter put IPFW with two outs after a strikeout, but Tyler Shepherd came up with a clutch 2 RBI double to center allowing both Mitch Trzeciak and VanSumeren to score.

VanSumeren was 2-for-4 on the day and Shepherd came in off the bench to go 2-for-2. IPFW ended the game with six total hits as Shane Trevino and Markus Kalber also reached base safely.

Butler hit a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh, but a team effort from the IPFW bullpen held the Bulldogs to a single run. Brandon Pease got the start and threw the first five inning of the game. Steve Danielak was the next Mastodon on the hill as he came in for 2.1 innings. Danielak gave up the bomb, but he struck out a team-high four batters.

Nate White got the win for IPFW and Connor Lawhead was credited with the save. Connor McLaughlin and Kyle Sorensen also got in on the action.

IPFW will return to action next weekend with a series against in-state rival Ball State.
