FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW baseball team will now play a three-game series against Ball State this weekend, however the Cardinals will be unable to host due to their field conditions.
The Mastodons will face Ball State at Taylor University on Friday and Saturday, and also pick up a game against the Trojans at 3 p.m. The weekend will end with a single game against Ball State at Bishop Chatard H.S. in Indianapolis.
The Taylor Trojans play at Winterholter Field in Upland, Ind. The newly renovated field features an artificial surface infield which will allow IPFW to get three games in. Bishop Chartard H.S. in Indianapolis also has a turf infield. The Mastodons played Butler there last weekend as Butler's field was also unplayable.
IPFW took the three-game series versus Butler by winning game two of the doubleheader on Saturday and recording a 2-1 victory over the Bulldogs on Sunday. The Mastodons are now 5-7 overall heading into the weekend.
The pitching rotation for IPFW this weekend will feature Jason Kalber throwing on Friday. Saturday's games will feature Chuck Weaver and Brandon Pease, and the weekend will come to a close with Steve Danielak on the bump for Sunday's game.
Kalber is 0-1 on the year in his four starts. The senior holds a 2.87 ERA and 11 strikeouts. Last year's strikeout leader, Chuck Weaver, is off to a rough start in 2013 as he posts an ERA of 6.48. Weaver is also 0-1 on the year, but he remains second on the team with 13 strikeouts.
Newcomer Brandon Pease has appeared in four games for IPFW with three starts. He has an ERA of 2.04 with 12 strikeouts and only four walks in 17.2 innings of work. Danielak, who was the closer on the team in 2012, has made four appearances and one start in 2013. He is 2-1 on the year with an ERA of 6.35.
It has been a very hot start to the season for second baseman Markus Kalber. He leads the team with a .372 batting average and seven doubles. Kalber has also scored four runs and has one of IPFW's three home runs on the season.
Shane Trevino has provided power to the IPFW lineup with two home runs and a team-high seven RBI's. Newcomers Tyler Shepherd and Evan VanSumeren have also recently impacted the lineup. Shepherd has three doubles, giving him four RBI's and VanSumeren has a five RBI's to go with a triple.
Ball State enters the weekend with an overall record of 6-8. The Cardinals recently broke up a four-game losing streak with a 10-2 win over Harvard on Sunday, March 10. BSU returns home after playing multiple games in South Carolina facing teams such as Morehead State, the Gamecocks, Coastal Carolina, and Ohio State.
Friday's doubleheader was scheduled to be the home opener for Ball State, but the weather did not cooperate which is why the games will be played at Taylor University and Bishop Chatard H.S.
Cody Campbell is the only every day starter that is hitting over .300 for Ball State. Campbell comes in at .306 with six doubles, a triple and nine RBI's. TJ Weir is the club's home run leader with two and Billy Wellman has a team-high 12 RBI's.
Scott Baker and Chris Marangon have pitched a large majority of the innings for Ball State early in the season. Baker is off to a great 4-0 start with an ERA of 2.25. He leads the team with 26 strikeouts and has opponents hitting just .253. Marangon is 1-0 in his four starts with an ERA of 2.77. He is second on the team with 14 strikeouts.
The Trojans are 3-7 overall with a 1-1 record at home. Taylor picked up wins over Lourdes, Bryan College and most recently at home vs. Indiana University Southeast. Austin York and Grant Hendershot are the top batters in the lineup as York leads the team with a .455 batting average. Hendershot is second on the team at .357 and Jordan Coffey is the power hitter of the unit with two home runs and a team-high five RBI's.
Taylor Luna has been on the mound for two of Taylor's three wins on the year. Luna holds a 4.91 ERA and is second on the team in strikeouts with 12. Ryan Baker is the strikeout leader with 14. He is 0-3 on the year.
