GAME ONE BOX SCORE (.pdf) | GAME TWO BOX SCORE (.pdf)
ROCHESTER, Mich. - The IPFW Mastodons took a pair from the Oakland Golden Grizzlies on Tuesday afternoon, winning the opener 1-0 on a pitching masterpiece from sophomore Miranda Kramer, before out-lasting the hosts 4-2 in 11 innings in the evening finale.
Kramer pitched 12.1 innings on the day, striking out 23 and giving up just seven hits and no runs, while Megan Flenniken pitched the first five and two thirds of the nightcap, scattering eight hits without allowing an earned run.
Ashleigh Bousquet was 3-for-6 with three runs scored, three RBI's, and two home runs with 10 total bases on the day. Four others, including Alex Bousquet, Dani Pugh, Larissa Franklin, and Brittany Kachur, each had two hits, with Pugh driving in two others.
Kramer made it through two outs into the bottom of the fifth inning before allowing her first hit, a bunt single, and gave up just three hits in the game while striking out 15, the second-highest single-game total in school history.
The Mastodons (22-8, 6-0 Summit League) got their run in the game when Ashleigh Bousquet hit leadoff home run in the top of the fourth inning, providing the only score of the contest.
Oakland (5-16-1, 1-9 Summit League) threatened in the bottom of the sixth with back-to-back singles to start the inning, before a foul out, a strike out, and another foul out ended the threat.
In all, Kramer struck out the side just twice, but had at least two strikeouts in six of seven innings in the circle, using just 97 pitches (76 strikes) in the game.
IPFW managed six hits in the game, from six different players, while Bousquet had the only run and RBI in the game.
In the nightcap neither team could cross the plate until the Golden Grizzlies plated their first in the bottom of the third inning when the hosts scored on a fielding error, before adding an additional run in the bottom of the fifth on a wild pitch.
Trailing 2-0 into the top of the sixth, Kayti Hanson drew an inning-opening walk, before she and Ashleigh Bousquet scored on Bousquet's second home run of the day, this one knotting the score at 2-2.
Two scoreless innings followed, before the Mastodons looked as if they had taken a one-run lead; however, on an appeal it was found that an IPFW baserunner missed a bag on her way to the plate, and was called out at second base.
Overall four scoreless innings passed until IPFW used a pair of walks to put two runners on, before Dani Pugh doubled to left center, sending Kachur and Ashleigh Bousquet across the plate for the game-winning runs, as the Golden Grizzlies went down in order in the bottom of the 11th, securing the IPFW win.
Ashleigh Bousquet was 2-for-4 for the Mastodons with two runs scored and two RBI's, while Kachur and Pugh were each 2-for-5, Pugh driving in a pair.
Flenniken went the first five and two-thirds of an inning for the no-decision, before Kramer came in to finish the game for the last five and a third inning, striking out eight and allowing four hits, picking up her second win of the day, and sixth straight for the Mastodons, improving to 15-4 on the season.
The Mastodons and Golden Grizzlies take back to battle on Wednesday afternoon starting at noon.
