ROCHESTER, Mich. - The IPFW Mastodons scored three runs in the second, and four more in the fifth, as the Mastodons completed the season sweep of the Oakland Grizzlies with a 7-0 shutout on the road.
The win improves IPFW to 23-8 on the season, and a perfect 7-0 in Summit League play, setting up a battle of the two remaining conference undefeated teams on Friday, April 19, when the North Dakota State Bison (19-13, 6-0 Summit) come to town for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. on Friday, and a series finale on Saturday.
Miranda Kramer picked up the win, improving to 16-4 on the season after pitching the first five innings of the game, striking out four, before Megan Flenniken closed out the game with two innings, striking out three, as each pitcher gave up just one hit.
Oakland opened the game offensively with a hit from catcher Erika Polidori, but would not see anyone else reach base unti the bottom of the seventh inning, and by that time the Mastodons had opened a healthy seven-run advantage.
IPFW struck first in the top of the second inning when Alex Bousquet reached on a fielding error, advancing to second on a Hillary Kartman single, before Flenniken doubled home Bousquet, driving in the eventual game-winning run. A Kayti Hanson infield single scored Flenniken, before a Larissa Franklin single scored Stephanie Beuther.
After a pair of scoreless inings, the Mastodons hit paydirt again in the top of the fifth inning with four runs, starting with back-to-back singles from hanson and Franklin. A sacrifice bunt moved both runners ahead a base, before Ashleigh Bousquet walked to load the bases. Dani Pugh followed with an RBI single, before Alex Bousquet hit a sacrifice fly scoring Franklin. Kartman followed with a double to center field, proving the sixth and seventh runs of the game.
Oakland came through with their second hit of the game to lead off the seventh inning, but she was forced out in a game-ending double play, as Flenniken shut the door on the game.
Kartman and Hanson were each 2-for-3 in the game, while Franklin was 2-for-4. Kartman drove in a pair, as each of the seven runs were scored by different players.
