FORT WAYNE, Ind. - On a breezy and cold Friday afternoon, the North Dakota State Bison took a pair of games from the IPFW Mastodons, winning the opener 3-1 before taking the nightcap 4-1.
The Mastodons (23-10, 7-2 Summit) picked up six hits on the day, two coming from Megan Flenniken, inluding a solo home run in the second game. Miranda Kramer struck out 13 batters for IPFW in the opener, scattering five hits and allowing three earned runs, while Flenniken struck out seven and allowed a pair of earned runs, picking up the loss in game two.
North Dakota State (21-13, 8-0 Summit League) jumped ahead early when Jenina Ortega hit a two-run home run in the top of the first inning, providing the eventual game-winning run of the game. The Bison added a solo home run from Amanda Grable in the top of the third, taking the margin to three at 3-0.
In the bottom of the third inning, the Mastodons strung together a fielding error and back-to-back walks to load the bases, before Alex Bousquet struck out, but reached first as the ball squirted past NDSU catcher Ortega, allowing Franklin to score the team's only run in the game.
Neither team would reach the scoring column the rest of the way, with the Bison holding on to the two-run win.
IPFW got hits from Franklin and Flenniken, with Franklin scoring the team's only run. Kramer fell to 16-5 on the season, as she struck out 13 while walking just two.
Whitney Johnson picked up the win for North Dakota State, striking out 16 and walking three.
In the nightcap the Mastodons struck first when Flenniken hit a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning; however, the Bison quickly responded with a two-run home run in the top of the sixth, before back-to-back infield singles, and a fielding error, allowed the third run in the inning to score, adding another run in the top of the seventh to give the game its 4-1 final score.
IPFW picked up four hits in the final game, one each from Dani Pugh, Flenniken, Audrey Mintari, and Kayti Hanson. Flenniken fell to 6-5, striking out seven and walking one, while Johnson picked up her second win of the day, striking out six and walking three in the finale.
The teams meet again on Saturday afternoon at 12 p.m. at the IPFW Softball Field.
