FORT WAYNE, Ind. - IPFW gave up six runs in the top of the eighth inning, earning back two in the bottom of the inning, but could not make up the entire amount as the North Dakota State Bison completed the series sweep of the Mastodons on Saturday afternoon by an 8-4 score.
Ashleigh Bousquet was a perfect 4-for-4 for the Mastodons, scoring once and driving in a run while Brittany Kachur was 2-for-5. Miranda Kramer picked up the loss for IPFW, striking out 10 over 7.2 innings, giving up seven runs, only two of those earned, while walking a season-high seven.
The Bison jumped up first on the scoreboard when Amanda Grable hit a two-out solo home run in the top of the first inning.
The Mastodons answered back in the bottom of the second inning when Alex Bousquet reached on a fielder's choice, was advanced to second on a walk and to third on a hit batter, before Larissa Franklin singled to left field to knot the score at one run apiece.
NDSU squeezed a run across in the top of the fourth inning, and IPFW once again answered an inning and a half later when Megan Flenniken reached by being hit by a pitch, advanced to second on Audrey Mintari's second hit-by-pitch of the game, and scored when Kachur singled to left field, and the left fielder misplayed the ball allowing the senior to score.
Neither team would score for the next two innings, and IPFW had two outs in the top of the eighth inning before a pop-up on a would-be third out was dropped allowing Grable to score from second, and the Bison tacked on five more runs to take an 8-2 lead into the bottom of the eighth.
IPFW answered with back-to-back two-out solo home runs from Ashleigh Bousquet and Dani Pugh, and Flenniken followed with a single, but a strikeout ended the game with the Mastodons falling 8-4.
Kramer, with her first strikeout of the game became the school's single-season strikeout record holder, as she now has 178 on the year, as the Mastodons went 12-of-36 from the plate in the game. The team's four errors are the second-most this season by the squad.
The Mastodons return to action on Tuesday, April 23 when the team travels to Bowling Green, Ohio, to take on the Bowling Green Falcons in a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
