FORT WAYNE, Ind. - - The IPFW Mastodons fell in the opening round of the 2013 Summit League Tennis Championships hosted by the Mastodons, falling to the Kansas City Kangaroos by a 5-1 score.
In doubles, the Kansas City No. 3 team closed first with an 8-3 win over Andres Cobos and Jonathan Raa, before the Mastodon team of Connor Andrews and Martin Muadi held on late for a 9-7 victory at No. 2 doubles.
For the deciding doubles point, the IPFW No. 1 doubles team of Daniel Kang and Joao Freitas led for nearly the entire match, before the 'Roos scored two straight, breaking an IPFW serve to lead 7-6, but the Mastodons answered back by breaking serve on match point, to tie the No. 1 doubles score at 7-7. The teams traded points on their serve, sending the match into a tiebreaker, in which the 'Roos scored twice late to claim the win, and the doubles point for the squad.
The Kangaroos jumped ahead quickly at the start of singles competition, taking wins at No. 2 and No. 5 in straight sets. Three different matches were working their way to finish, as the No. 3 singles finished moments before No. 1 and No. 4, securing the win for UMKC, as the team's singles win came from Freitas at No. 4.
The loss ends the season for the Mastodons at 9-17, as Kansas City advances to tomorrow's Championship Match.
