QUINCY, Ill. - The IPFW Mastodons fell on the road for the second straight night, falling to the Quincy Hawks 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-21), IPFW's first loss to Quincy since 2002.
Anthony Randolph led IPFW with 10 kills, while Eddie Rivera had nine, and Ramon Burgos seven. Jordan Armstrong dished out 25 assists, while Burgos and Eddie Rivera each had one service ace. Luis Bertran picked up 11 digs, while Burgos, Andy Sellan, and Bryan Saunders each had three blocks.
The Mastodons led briefly in the first set, before Quincy pushed ahead, leading by as many as seven at 24-17, before IPFW made one last push close to within three, but the margin was too much to overcome in the 25-21 first-set win.
The second set found IPFW trailing 4-0 out of the gate, but countered quickly, using an 11-4 run to turn the tables and lead 11-8. The Mastodons took ahead by five at 21-16; however, Quincy closed strong, out-scoring IPFW 9-2 the rest of the way to claim the 25-23 second-set win.
In the third set the teams battled back and forth early to seven ties and three lead changes, and IPFW led 9-7 before the hosts ran off six straight points to lead 13-9, and never trailed again. Down five at 21-16, the Mastodons fought back and closed to within one at 21-20, and again trailed by one at 22-21, but Quincy rebounded to score three straight and claim the three-set win over the Mastodons.
The Mastodons had won 21 straight matches against the Hawks, and are now 39-4 all-time against the school.
Quincy was led by Jack Gamache who had 10 kills, while Steven Battaglia had eight.
The Mastodons return to action on Wednesday, April 10 when the squad hosts the Loyola Ramblers in a 7 p.m. first serve.
