FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Behind a pair of shutouts from pitchers Miranda Kramer and Megan Flenniken, the IPFW Mastodon swept a doubleheader against the Detroit Titans by scores of 8-0 and 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon, as Kramer's win put her with a 19-7 record on the season, a new single-season school record for pitching victories.
Larissa Franklin and Dani Pugh each picked up three hits, while Kayti Hanson, Audrey Mintari, and Ashleigh Bousquet had two hits apiece. Pugh drove in three runs, while Franklin scored on three occasions.
In the opener, IPFW (28-13) wasted little time, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning, sending all nine batters to the plate. After a fly out to start the frame, Franklin doubled down the left field line, followed by a single from Ashleigh Bousquet. With runners on the corners, Bousquet took off for second base, and as the throw was in air, Franklin scampered home, successfully completing the double steal. Pugh then singled up the middle to score Bousquet. A walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, before Brittany Kachur drew a bases-loaded walk to put the 'Dons ahead 3-0.
After giving up a double in the top of the second inning - the only hit of the game for the Titans (5-42) - IPFW responded again with two more runs in the bottom of the second, the first when Pugh singled home Franklin, before Hillary Kartman doubled home Pugh, putting IPFW with a 5-0 advantage.
Two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning, the first on sacrifice fly by Ashleigh Bousquet that scored her twin sister Alex, ad the second on a single by Pugh to score Franklin.
The game ended in the bottom of the fifth when Stephanie Beuther singled and twice advanced on a wild pitch before a Prestlee Cooper single scored Beuther, giving the game its eight-point mercy-rule margin.
Pugh was a perfect 3-for-3 in the game, driving in three and scoring twice, while the team's other seven hits came from seven different batters. Franklin went 1-for-1 with a trio of runs scored while stealing four bases, giving her 25 on the season.
Kramer pitched the full five innings while giving up just one hit, walking two and hitting a batter, while striking out nine, needing just 82 pitches in the effort.
Both teams struggled to score in the nightcap, as Detroit threatened with two hits in the top of the first only to see both left stranded, as the Mastodons would not reach the scoreboard until the bottom of the third inning.
In the bottom of the third,Hanson hit a one-out single, stole second base, and advanced to third on a groundout before Frankliln doubled to left field to put the Mastodons ahead 1-0.
Two more runs in the bottom of the fourth followed when Audrey Mintari doubled home pinch-runner Taylor Gordy Prescott, and Hanson successfully converted a sacrifice squeeze with the bases loaded to score Kartman.
IPFW added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when Hanson scored on an error by the Titans, giving the game its 4-0 final score.
Hanson was a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs scored in the afternoon finale, while Franklin was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Flenniken struck out three while scattering seven hits over seven innings of work for the shutout.
The Mastodons return to action on Friday, May 3, when the squad hosts the IUPUI Jaguars in the regular-season ending Summit League series starting at 3 p.m. at the IPFW Softball Field.
