Baseball Takes 8-2 Loss to South Dakota State in Series Finale

BROOKINGS, S.D. – IPFW scored the first run of the game on Sunday, but the Jackrabbits erupted with six runs in the bottom of the second inning which led to an 8-2 loss for the Mastodons.

Back-to-back doubles from Clay Hathaway and Evan VanSumeren got IPFW on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning. Hathaway hit a one-out double to right field and VanSumeren followed in the lineup with a double down the right field line which sent Hathaway to the plate.

The difference in Sunday's game was the high level of play from South Dakota State in the bottom of the inning as the Jackrabbits scored six runs off six hits. Three of the six hits were doubles as SDSU grabbed momentum that led to the victory.

SDSU scored a single run in both the fifth and sixth inning and IPFW rounded out the scoring total with a run in the eighth. Kevin Wirth singled to centerfield to lead off the eighth and a single from Lucas Salerno moved Wirth to third base. Malcolm White grounded into a double play, but Wirth scored on the play as IPFW fell to 21-27 overall.

Wirth ended the game 2-for-3 from the plate to lead IPFW. The 'Dons recorded eight hits compared to 13 from SDSU.

Steve Danielak had a tough outing on the mound for IPFW. The junior got hit with seven earned runs through the first six innings of the game. Danielak struck out four and walked two. Connor McLaughlin and Danny Tursell also got involved on Sunday. Each player threw one inning, allowed one hit, and stuck out one Jackrabbit.

IPFW will return to action on Tuesday, May 14 as they travel to Rochester, Mich. for a doubleheader against the Golden Grizzlies.
