FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW baseball team will travel to Rochester, Mich. to face the Oakland Golden Grizzlies in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. Game time for the first contest is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Mastodons enter the final week of the regular season with a 21-27 overall record after being swept by South Dakota State last weekend in a four-game series. IPFW is now 8-16 in Summit League action with six games remaining.
Tyler Shepherd currently leads the team with a .307 batting average. The junior has started in 42 of IPFW's 43 games and has six doubles, a home run, and 17 RBI's. The senior tandem of Clay Hathaway and Markus Kalber have also impacted the lineup as Hathaway brings a .290 average into the doubleheader with nine doubles, three triples, and four home runs. Kalber holds down second base in the field and leads the team with 16 doubles offensively.
IPFW's solid overall pitching has kept the team in games. The Mastodons post a team ERA of 4.11 which is one of the lowest marks in IPFW history. The bullpen has also been a bright spot in 2013 as the team set a new school record with 12 saves.
Every IPFW pitcher has at least one win on the year, but it's junior Steve Danielak that leads the team with a 5-4 record on the mound. Travis Reboulet, Connor Lawhead, and Kyle Sorensen all share the team lead with three saves on the season.
SCOUTING OAKLAND
The Golden Grizzlies are 15-32 overall with a 10-12 Summit League record heading into Tuesday. OU most recently lost three of four games vs. Omaha one weekend after taking three of four at North Dakota State.
Jason Hager was recognized as the Summit League Pitcher of the Week for Oakland on Monday, but it will be the duo of Chris Van Dyke and Lucas Scocchia taking the mound for the Grizzlies on Tuesday.
Van Dyke is 4-3 on the year with a 4.46 ERA. He has 37 strikeouts in 42.1 innings. He picked up his fourth win of the year with a start on May 5 as Oakland won at North Dakota State by the final score of 13-7.
Scocchia is now 0-4 on the year after taking the loss as the starter in the Central Michigan game which was played back on May 8. Scocchia posts an ERA of 10.31. He has only been on the mound for 18.1 innings this year, striking out 13 and walking 10.
Robby Enslen has started in all 47 games for Oakland and holds a .247 batting average that includes nine doubles and two home runs. Nolan Jacoby leads the team with 10 doubles and the home run king on the roster is Todd Dunham.
