FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Mastodons head into the final weekend of the 2013 regular season with a four-game series at North Dakota State. IPFW split a doubleheader against the Bison on April 14 by taking a 4-3 win in game one, but losing 4-6 in game two.
The final series between IPFW and North Dakota State will begin on Thursday, May 16 with first pitch scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday's contest is a doubleheader that begins at 2 p.m. and the regular season finale will take place on Saturday, May 18 with a 2 p.m. start.
ABOUT IPFW
The Mastodons are 22-28 overall with a 9-17 record in the Summit League after splitting Tuesday's doubleheader at Oakland. They defeated the Golden Grizzlies 8-5 in game one, but took a 1-11 loss in game two.
Malcolm White and Brandon Soat each recorded four hits in the doubleheader at Oakland. Soat had two doubles and two RBI's while White ended the day with two stolen bases and two runs scored in his seven at-bats.
Soat has one of the highest batting averages on the team at .304. The true freshman has seven doubles, two triples and a home run on the year. IPFW's home run leader has started in every game at the shortstop position for the team in 2013. Clay Hathaway has five homers to go with nine doubles and a team-high three triples.
IPFW's weekend rotation will feature Jason Kalber, Chuck Weaver, Steve Danielak and Brandon Pease. Kalber and Weaver are seniors that may be making their last start of the IPFW career this weekend. Weaver is the team leader in strikeouts with 67 and Kalber has one of the lowest ERA's on the team at 3.25.
Danielak posts the best record of any IPFW pitcher as he enters the weekend with a 5-4 mark on the mound. The weekend will come to an end with an appearance from Pease who holds a 1-2 record through 11 starts.
SCOUTING NORTH DAKOTA STATE
North Dakota State split a doubleheader with South Dakota State on Tuesday moving their overall record to 20-25 with a 7-13 mark in the Summit League. The Bison won 11-10 in game one behind a 2-for-3 hitting performance from John Skrbec who ended the game with a team-high three RBI's and two runs scored. Jake Heck got the win and Kyle Kingsley came in for his seventh save of the season.
Game two went to South Dakota State as the Jackrabbits scored four runs in the top of the sixth to earn the victory. Blake Turbak led NDSU in a losing effort going 3-for-5 from the plate with two RBI's. Turbak is tied for the team lead in RBI's with 28. He is hitting .292 on the year with 10 doubles, three triples and two home runs.
North Dakota State has two players with a batting average over .300 with Kyle Kleinendorst leading the way at .331. Kleinendorst leads the team in doubles with 11 and he shares the team lead with 28 RBI's. Wes Satzinger enters the series with a .320 batting average and a team-high .508 slugging percentage. Other Bison players to keep an eye on include Tim Colwell who leads the team with 12 stolen bases and Kirk Kenneally who has four home runs on the season.
John Straka is the ace in the weekend rotation with a 1.90 ERA to go along with a 6-2 overall record. He will throw Thursday's game against Jason Kalber. Straka leads the team with 77 strikeouts in 90 innings pitched, he has two shutouts and five complete games to his credit.
David Ernst and Trevor Jaunich will also get starts on the mound for North Dakota State this weekend. Ernst is 4-5 on the year with a 4.07 ERA. He has 43 strikeouts and just 17 walks in 2013. Jaunich will throw game two of Friday's doubleheader for the Bison. He is 2-6 on the year with a 5.47 ERA.
