Kalber Throws Complete Game in 6-2 Win over Omaha

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – IPFW defeated Omaha on Friday afternoon by the final score of 6-2. The Mastodons scored three in the second, one in the third and tacked on two more in the sixth to improve their overall record to 19-21.
Jason Kalber was great on the mound against the Mavericks limiting Omaha to just one earned run. Kalber struck out five batters and only issued one walk. He allowed seven hits in his nine innings of work, and ended the day with his second win of the season.
The Mastodons scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to grab an early lead. Steve Lowden singled up the middle and Clay Hathaway joined him on base after being hit by a pitch. Brandon Soat came to the plate and delivered a two-RBI triple that went over the head of the centerfielder. Soat would come home to make the score 3-0 after a sacrifice fly from Kevin Wirth.
IPFW pushed the score to 4-0 in the bottom of the third as Malcolm White scored from second base after an RBI stand up double from Kristian Gayday. The Mavericks responded with two runs in the top of the fifth, but IPFW came up with two more runs in the sixth to earn the win.
Wirth picked up his second RBI of the day in the sixth inning with a single through the left side of the infield which sent Steve Lowden to home plate. The second run of the inning came off a wild pitch. Wirth finished the day 1-for-2 with two RBI's and a walk. Gayday was 2-for-4 with an RBI and both Lowden and Soat scored two runs each helping IPFW pick up the league win.
IPFW will return to action with a doubleheader against Omaha tomorrow at 2 p.m. The weekend will end with a single game on Sunday starting at noon.
