FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The IPFW baseball team recorded a 4-1 victory over the Butler Bulldogs on Wednesday afternoon to improve their overall record to 21-23. The Mastodons ended their 17-game home stand and will now finish the season with 10 straight road contests.
The Mastodons scored four runs through the first three innings of the game and then coasted to the finish line to record their 21st victory of the year. Nate White was one of three pitchers used on the mound on Wednesday as he earned his second win of the year. White threw six innings and only allowed two hits which turned into one run. He struck out six and walked five.
Kyle Sorensen threw two good innings of baseball on Wednesday limiting the Bulldogs to just one hit, and Connor McLaughlin came in to record his second save of the season by shutting out Butler in the ninth inning.
Offensively, Brandon Soat went 2-for-5 with an RBI and Lucas Salerno went 2-for-3 with a run scored. Kendall Whitman impacted the game with a 1-for-3 performance that included an RBI and a run scored and Kevin Wirth helped the team with a 2-for-4 day from the plate.
IPFW pushed two runs across in the bottom of the first inning to grab an early lead. Gayday scored an unearned run off a Butler throwing error and Whitman singled to increase the lead as Steve Lowden crossed home plate.
Butler chipped into the lead with a run in the top of the second, but IPFW countered as Salerno led off the inning with a single back up the middle of the field. Salerno moved into scoring position after a failed pick-off attempt and he went on to score off an RBI single from Soat.
The Mastodons added an insurance run in the third as a sacrifice fly from Malcolm White allowed Whitman to score from third base. Neither team was able to generate a run after the third as IPFW won their final game at Mastodon Field this season.
IPFW will return to action with a four-game road series at South Dakota State this weekend. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m.
