Mastodons Take 6-2 Loss at South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The IPFW baseball team fell to South Dakota State on Friday afternoon by the final score of 6-2. The Mastodons are now 21-24 overall with an 8-13 mark in the Summit League.
Malcolm White went 1-for-3 from the plate for the Mastodons with a walk and an RBI and Caleb Fenimore finished the game 1-for-3 with a run scored. The 'Dons were limited to just two hits as Layne Somsen paced the Jackrabbits with eight innings on the mound and nine strikeouts.
Jason Kalber took the mound for IPFW and threw seven innings before being replaced by Kyle Sorensen. Kalber allowed 10 hits, but only gave up one earned run while striking out four. Sorensen entered the game in the bottom of the eighth inning as SDSU poured on three more runs to secure the win.
The Jackrabbits went up 3-0 after four innings, but IPFW struck back with a run in the top of the fifth to get on the scoreboard. A three-run eighth inning gave SDSU some room and the 'Dons were only able to generate one run in the ninth as the Jackrabbits held on for the win.
Fenimore singled to right to lead off the fifth inning for IPFW. A fly out moved him into scoring position and Malcolm White connected with a single to centerfield sending Fenimore to the dish.
The score remained 3-1 until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Jackrabbits tacked on three more runs. Danforth doubled to right center field with two runners on to clear the bases and he would go on to score the final run of the inning off an IPFW error.
IPFW responded with a run in the top of the ninth as a groundout from Brandon Soat allowed Kristian Gayday to score.
The Mastodons will return to Erv Huether Field tomorrow with a scheduled doubleheader against the Jackrabbits.
