BROOKINGS, S.D. – The IPFW baseball team took to losses to their overall record with a 2-5 loss in game one and a 3-8 setback in game two to the South Dakota State Jackrabbits.
IPFW is now 21-26 overall with an 8-15 league record. They will face South Dakota State tomorrow in the final game of the series before traveling to Oakland to play the Golden Grizzlies in a doubleheader on Tuesday, May 14.
The sixth inning was full of action in game one as each team scored all of their runs during that stretch of time. IPFW jumped on top with a two-run home run from Steve Lowden, but the Jackrabbits won the game with five runs in the bottom of the inning.
Lowden ended the game going 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBI's and a run scored. Malcolm White, Kristian Gayday, Kendall Whitman, Caleb Fenimore and Markus Kalber rounded out the hit total for IPFW as they finished the game with seven.
Chuck Weaver threw all six innings of game one as the first part of the doubleheader was only scheduled for seven. Weaver struck out 10 batters and only issued three walks. Only two of SDSU's five runs were earned.
The Mastodons scored the first three runs of the game in the nightcap, but SDSU came back with eight unanswered runs to earn the victory. The first two batters of the game walked for IPFW and Kristian Gayday laid down a sacrifice bunt that moved both into scoring position. A walk loaded the bases and Whitman came up with a clutch two-run single down the left field line to push two across in the first.
A lead-off double from Tyler Shepherd got the third inning going. Shepherd was once again aggressive on the base path as he swiped third base with Lowden at the plate. Lowden singled to center to score Shepherd before a double play would end the inning.
South Dakota chipped away at the lead and tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning. A single run in the sixth would give them the lead and two runs in both the seventh and eighth would blow the game wide open.
Lowden and Kevin Wirth each recorded two hits in game two of the doubleheader. The 'Dons once again ended the game with seven as Shepherd, Whitman, and Markus Kalber impacted the game.
Brandon Pease tossed the first five innings of the game and Travis Reboulet took the hill for the final three. Pease struck out three and only walked one while giving up two earned runs. Reboulet only gave up one earned run, but five Jackrabbits crossed home plate off five hits.
