FARGO, N.D. - Behind a Summit League Championship-record 15 strikeouts from sophomore Miranda Kramer, the IPFW Mastodons move into the winner's side of the bracket with a 5-2 victory over the South Dakota Coyotes on Thursday afternoon.
With the win, IPFW improves to 32-13 on the season, and will face off against North Dakota State at 1 p.m. EST.
Larissa Franklin was 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored, while Ashleigh Bousquet and Kayti Hanson were each 2-for-3. Dani Pugh drove in three runs.
The Coyotes reached the scoreboard first in the top of the second inning, before the 'Dons evened the score with an RBI double off the bat of Ashleigh Bousquet to even the count at 1-1.
IPFW put the game out of reach in the bottom of the fifth inning when Franklin and Ashleigh Bousquet hit back-to-back singles, before Dani Pugh hit a three-run home run to center field, scoring three. Hanson drove in the team's final run with a single up the middle to score Audrey Mintari, giving IPFW its five runs in the game.
South Dakota tacked on an additional run in the top of the seventh on a double and a single, but two strikeouts ended the game and put Kramer well ahead of the previous strikeout record of 12, tied earlier in the day by North Dakota State's Whitney Johnson.
Kramer went the entire seven innings, scattering six hits, allowing two runs and walking one while striking out 15.
