Mastodons Draw to 2-2 Tie with Northern Kentucky

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The IPFW Mastodons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half, but could not hold on, as the Northern Kentucky Norse used a goal with just over nine and a half minutes left in the game to force overtime, and neither could score in either extra session, forcing a 2-2 tie.
The Mastodons were out-shot 27-to-12 in the match, while Northern Kentucky had twice as many corner kicks as the 'Dons (10-to-5).
Before either team could get any footing, the Mastodons put a shot past the goal when Corey Tom fed freshman Oscar Uyamadu, who took the ball down the right side, and beat Northern Kentucky goalkeeper A.J. Fleak, putting the Mastodons ahead 1-0 less than five minutes into the contest.
Both teams would continue to pepper their counterpart's goalie, with neither finding success until Robbie Guzman snuck a pass past the Norse keeper to a waiting Stephen Danielian, who put the ball into the back of the net in the 34th minute to give the hosts a 2-0 advantage, one that they would hold for the remainder of the first half.
On their first shot of the second half, Northern Kentucky cut the deficit in half when Cian McDonald beat IPFW goalkeeper Raphael Kotzock one-on-one just six minutes into the second stanza.
The Mastodons held onto their one-goal advantage for the next 30 minutes, until the Norse knotted the score when Craig Heard put a shot into the back of the net to tie the score at two goals apiece with less than nine minutes to play in the contest.
The rest of the eight and a half minutes of regulation, as well as the pair of overtime periods, were scoreless, as the team's closed the match with a 2-2 double overtime draw.
Uyamadu and Jose Rodriguez each had four shots for the Mastodons - two each on goal - while Kotzock had eight saves in the tie.
The Mastodons return to action on Sunday, September 1, when the squad hosts the Dayton Flyers at 1 p.m. at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
