Mastodons Close First Day of Spartan Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Behind a 2-0 first day from Sonya Sorokina, the IPFW Mastodons closed the first day of the Michigan State Spartan Invitational with a 4-8 overall record in singles matches on the day, while falling in all three of the team's doubles matches.
Sorokina defeated a pair of Michigan State opponents in the "C" Draw of the Tournament, beating Anna Zelechonok 6-3, 6-2, and Christina Brown 6-1, 6-2. Sorokina has a pair of matches tomorrow, one against Ellen Folkers of Cleveland State, and the other against Ellen Folkers, also of Cleveland State.
In the "A" Draw Mayu Sato fell in the opening round by a 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 score to Katelyn Nguyen of Toledo, before coming back to win 6-4, 6-3 over Kathryn Sharples of UIC. She will face off against Sydney Rider of Wisconsin tomorrow.
Carlota Trevino went 1-1 on the opening day, falling in the first round to Shannon Newnes of Akron 6-4, 6-2, and defeating Julianne Gruber of Michigan State 6-3, 6-4. Tomorrow Trevino will see Jennifer Yen of Michigan State for the next match.
Also in the "A" Draw was Ella Norgren and Miloslava Shustova, both of whom went 0-2 on the day. Norgren fell 6-1, 6-1 to Kara Sherwood of Cleveland State and 6-0, 6-2 to Emily Mazzola 6-0, 6-2. Shustova fell 6-1, 6-2 to Olga Shkundina of Akron and 6-2, 6-3 to Sydney Rider of Wisconsin. Norgren will face Mariana Palacios and Shustsova will face Sharples on Saturday.
In the "B" Draw, Marcy Huck fell 6-2, 6-0 to Athena Trouillot of Michigan State before falling in a tight 6-4, 6-4 battle with Mackenzie Bowman of Toledo. Huck will see Lexy Pitt of Toledo across the net on Saturday for her next match.
Sato and Shustova teamed up in doubles Draw A, falling 8-4 to Lauren Burich and Helen Root of Wisconsin by an 8-4 score. The duo will face Princess Gbadamosi and Victoria Bensimon of Cleveland State tomorrow.
In a tightly contested doubles match in the "B" Draw, Lindal and Huck fell in a tiebreaker 8-7 (1) to Mariana Palacios and Ann-Sophie Hahn of UIC, and will take on Katelyn Nguyen and Kayleigh Hall of Toledo on the courts on Saturday.
Trevino and Norgren fell 8-3 in the "C" Draw to Lexy Pitt and Kayleigh Hall of Toledo. Next up for the duo is Jennifer Yen and anna Zelechonok of Michigan State.
