Scouting the Pioneers
Denver won their first league game as a member of the Summit League, defeating South Dakota 91-84 at home. The Pioneers were led by junior Theresa Wirth who scored a career-high 26 points and nabbed eight rebounds. Morgan Van Riper-Rose (Eden Prairie, Minn.) sunk a season-high six three-pointers and was 8-of-13 (61.5 percent) from the field tying her season-high of 22 points, the third time she has finished with 20-plus points on the year.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Pioneers. Earlier in the season Denver had an eight-game losing streak from November 21-December 28, before defeating Illinois State 67-60 on December 30.
The Pioneers return four starters, including their top two scorers, from a team that went 14-17, and advanced to the quarterfinals of WAC Championship. Last year's leading scorer Van Riper-Rose was named a preseason All-Summit League selection. Edwards was named to WAC All Freshman-Team also.
All-Time Series
This will be the first ever meeting between the two schools.
Elite Company...
Entering action this week, Amanda Hyde averages 23.1 points per game, but she does more than just shoot. Hyde's 4.6 assists per game ranks her sixth in Summit League and puts her among elite company in the NCAA. Hyde is just one of three players in Division I women's basketball whom average at least 20.0 points and 4.5 assists per game. The others are Elise O'Connor of UMKC and Jennifer Schlott of Utah State. If you add in Hyde's 5.5 rebounds a game, only O'Connor and Hyde can claim that accomplishment.
Third Times a Charm...
Amanda Hyde collected her third Summit League Player of the Week honor this season and fifth of her career for her performances Jan. 6-12.
In IPFW's double overtime win at North Dakota State on January 9, the senior guard scored 35 points on 12-of-19 shooting with 10 rebounds and five assists. With 0.3 of a second remaining in regulation, Hyde sank a pair of free throws to send the contest into overtime. With four seconds remaining in the first overtime period, Hyde buried a three-pointer to send it to a second overtime session, helping the Mastodons secure the victory. In IPFW's loss at reigning league champion South Dakota State on January 11, she scored 26 points with four assists and three rebounds. For the week, Hyde averaged 30.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game. She shot 65 percent (20-of-31) from the field, 55 percent (6-of-11) from three-point range and was a perfect 15-of-15 at the free throw line.
