Women's Tennis Drops 2014 Opener at Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The IPFW Mastodons won the doubles point, while newcomer Mayu Sato picked up a win at No. 1 singles; however, the strong Eastern Michigan squad pulled ahead in the 5-2 win in the Mastodon season opener.
IPFW (0-1) won the doubles point, as the team of Miloslava Shustova and Emily Richardson picked up a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles for the first final of the day. The Eastern Michigan pair of Zsofia Biro and Daphne Friedrichs won 6-4 at No. 3 doubles, setting up a winner-take-all result at No. 1. The Mastodon top pair of Sato and Marcy Huck fought to a 7-6 win at the top doubles spot, giving the Mastodons the doubles point.
Eastern Michigan (4-1) opened with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. The Eagles' Nino Mebuke topped Ella Norgren at No. 2 singles by a 6-1, 6-0 score, before EMU's Mariya Tocheva defeated Sofia Sorokina 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3.
The Mastodons answered back with Sato's 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles, knotting the score at two points apiece, before the hosts closed the match with wins at No. 5 (Maria Paula Ribero defeated Huck 6-4, 6-1), No. 4 (Friedrichs defeated Shustova 6-3, 6-2), and No. 6 (Biro defeated Carlota Trevino 6-4, 6-4) to win the match 5-2.
IPFW returns to action on February 7, when the Mastodons host Oakland and Northern Kentucky at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., respectively.
