SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – After earning the No. 3 seed following Friday's pool play matches, the IPFW men's volleyball took on Cal Baptist on Saturday for fifth place at the 50th annual UCSB Asics Invitational.
Cal Baptist, who entered the match ranked No. 15 in the AVCA Preseason Top 15 poll, took the match's opening set, but the 'Dons battled back behind a career-high 19 kills from junior Ramon Burgos to win the next three and come away with the 3-1 victory (19-25, 25-21, 25-16, 25-22).
The opening set went back and forth early with the teams trading points. With the score tied 9-9, though, the Lancers notched back-to-back points to take a lead they wouldn't let go, eventually winning the set 25-19.
IPFW held an early 6-5 lead in set two before a 7-3 scoring spurt, capped off with a pair of kills from Bryan Saunders, helped push the Mastodon advantage to 13-8. The 'Dons led by as much as six, 18-12, before Cal Baptist started to claw its way back. The Lancers cut the deficit to three at 24-21, but Burgos slammed down his sixth kill of the set to even the match at one set apiece.
The Mastodons never trailed in the third frame and hit .739 – with 18 kills against just one error – on their way to a 25-16 set win. With IPFW holding a 17-13 edge, an Andrew Sellan kill, sandwiched between two kills from Burgos, sparked an 8-3 run to close out the set and put the 'Dons in position to win their season-opener.
However, Cal Baptist wouldn't go away easily. The Lancers stayed in front for most of the fourth set, taking a 20-19 lead late. With the score tied at 21-21, a kill by senior Eddie Rivera put the Mastodons ahead and Rivera would eventually finish the Lancers off with an ace to seal the match.
Burgos finished the match hitting at a .680 clip, tallying 19 kills on 25 attempts. Sellan, who was named to the All-Tournament Team, added 15 kills while Rivera and Saunders recorded 10 kills each. Rivera came up one dig shy of a double-double, registering nine on the afternoon. Omar Rivera directed the high-powered offense with 56 assists.
IPFW hit .500 from the floor to go along with their 65 kills compared to Cal Baptist, who hit .490 as a team with 57 kills.
Up next, the Mastodons will return home to the Gates Sports Center to host Sacred Heart on Friday, Jan. 10 in their home opener beginning at 7 p.m.
