FORT WAYNE, Ind. – Despite Cody Schweitzer's career outing, the IPFW men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Bowling Green on Wednesday evening at the Hefner Soccer Complex.
Schweitzer set a new career high with eight saves as the Mastodons (3-4-3) were unable to capitalize on a gritty Falcon (8-2-0) defense. While facing one of the nation's top offenses, made numerous diving saves to keep a scoreless knot through most of the match. His previous career high in saves was six against Cincinnati earlier this season on September 17.
Bowling Green's Pat Flynn, the nation's top goal-scorer entering the night, placed four shots on goal, only to have each of them turned away by Schweitzer.
The Falcons would break through, earning a goal from Danny Baraldi in the 83rd minute of play. Bowling Green's Jacob Roth began the play near midfield, sending the ball in towards the night. After a leaping scrum with a Mastodon defender, the Falcon's Joe Sullivan managed to get his head on the ball, sending it to Baraldi on the left side of the net. Baraldi's shot came from 20 yards out, beating a diving Schweitzer and going into the top right corner.
The Blue and White were unable to take advantage of late chances to tie the match. In the 86th minute, Jacob Murphy dribbled the ball through the Falcon defense, getting by three defenders, and sending the ball in towards the net. However, the Bowling Green goalkeeper was able to catch the ball and preserve the shutout.
In a similar situation, Randy Maksimik fought his way through the defense and placing a shot on goal, only to have the goalkeeper turn it away in the 74th minute of play.
The Falcons held a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks, while IPFW held a 10-2 upper hand in saves.
The Mastodons travel to Western Illinois for their second Summit League match of the season. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m., at John MacKenzie Alumni Field.
